How does your van start below 0°C?; In particular the early models with 8140.27S engine

Hi all,

my Daily II was built in 1991 and has the 8140.27S 2.5l engine. The injection pump does not have the automatic adjustment of the injection timing when cold (electrically heated expansion element and small lever on the pump facing to the engine) - this is normal, I believe all Daily I and some early Daily II are like this. The preheating system seems to work normal (glow plug is fine, diesel valve clicks, indicator does not show error codes), the battery is fine, too.

My van starts perfectly fine above 2-3°C, starts a bit rough between +3 and -3°C and really doesn't want to start below -5°C. Obviously there can be many reasons for this, but I just want to see how other engines without the cold starting equipment behave before I fiddle with the injection timing and to a compression test. Any feedback welcome.

Regards
Raphael

On a cold day, I switch the ignition on and wait for the orange heating light to go off. Then I start the engineering.

Hi Mark,

Thanks, good to know you know to wait for the light, I guess this is he same on most diesel vehicles around the world. As indicated in the post I also know how the preheating/thermostarter works, have checked its components and am confident it does what it is supposed to.

I am more interested in how good other engines start that are NOT equipped with the automatic cold start system on the injection pump. All 2.8 l engines and most 2.5 l engines will have this and therefore start well. Mine doesn't and doesn't start well when cold, and I want to see if this is normal or if there is something else wrong.

Regards
Raphael

At the moment (cold mornings)my coil light stays on and doesn't go off. I usually wait 10 seconds or so and she fires up. Any ideas why my coil light is staying on?

mines a 2.8, and starts absolutely on the first catch of the starter motor every time regardless of temperature or how long its been stood. we took it out last weekend after it being stood untouched for 3 weeks, and it fired on the first turn of the starter motor every time.

mine starts fine in this temperature. I have never had a problem. My cold start advance is disconected as it kept breaking its cable. I have been told it should not make much difference. I will let you know if it ever gets cold here in the sunny south B)

when I had a MK1 when it went below freezing it just wouldnt start, would have to wait untill about 11am when it warmed up a bit in the winter sun, I got over this by buying one of those small parafin heaters that are meant to hang in the green house, already had a wire hanging hook which turned out to be a perfect fit for hanging it on the bottom hose, after using it overnight it would start instantly and within minutes the heater was hot to defrost the screen. used that for several years and carried on using it on my mk2 in winter because it speeded up the de frosting and cab warming, using mk3 these days and if I have an early winter start wouldnt hesitate to use again although both mk2 and 3 start ,just for the fast defrost/warm up.Joe
