Steering column rattle in Iveco 40.10 Turbo Daily 4x4 van; Steering column lifts 8-10mm, is this normal?

Hi, I have an Iveco 40.10 Turbo Daily van 4x4 and steering column has 8-10mm play when steering wheel lifted. I understand this may be a manufacturing specification [slip joint] to allow steering column shaft movement in event cabin/ chassis movement? If so, does anyone have technical diagrams, notes etc that confirm this specification as local transport authorities suggest it is defective. Thanks for any assistance. Cheers

I have the same vehicle and mine does the same. I have never had a problem with the MOT. I am not sure if others are the same so I will await replies with interest.

Thanks for your reply Graeme. I know steering play isn't a problem as I have driven over 100,000km touring outback Australia - without issue. Just dealing with an anal mechanic who will not pass roadworthy without formal confirmation.

Our does this too, wandered if it was meant to! It's a 2000 49-10 if that helps. Maybe in one of the manuals on here it'll say?

Mines a 59-12 so DVSA test for HGVs
Mine failed its MOT on this. Steering column UJ was worn very badly and steering bearing knackered.
I think you need to get underneath and check the steering play while someone s in the cab.
I took it to a garage to pre test the steering and front ball joints and they missed it so your MOT place may have done the same.
Not good if you're going along and something happens to the steering.
