If cambelt goes, will it bend the valves?

Whilst driving back from Italy on Saturday (in my Jeep with a 97 Iveco Turbo Daily engine), the cambelt went. I was travelling at about 75mph. Will it definitely have bent the valves? I need to decide whether it is worth taking the engine apart, or just buying another whole engine and putting that in instead.

Hello,

Sorry to hear your story..

If the timing belt breaks, you will 99% end up with bent valves, and you might have to have your cylinder heads rebuilt, but the engine isn't likely to be destroyed.

That's is almost 99% case..for the Iveco engine.

I don't know which engines this specifically relates too, but either the 2.8 or the newer 2.3 is meant to have sacrificial rockers or something.

I had mine slip last year, only whilst turning around so the engine just died and wouldn't restart, but luckily got away with it. Hadn't come off or snapped though which I guess may have helped it survive!

The guy was traveling with 75mph ...99% valves did not survive. ( around 3000rpm )

If he switched of engine immediately, then there is a chance some of the valves not broken / bent.

Either way, a cylinder head removal is needed to check valves and rockers.

yianissm is right, not at lot of hope at tick over on the 2.8 engines, but most engines are going to suffer at those revs, head off for sure.Joe
