oil leak in the engine bay, trying to locate it.

hi all. there is a messy oil leak in the injection pump side of the engine, might be leaking from a few places, so far the diesel lift pump and the power steering pump are suspect. The lift pump is gushing at high revs. - Wondering, is there gubbins under that, or is it just bolted on to the block?
Am i going top have to disconnect the fuel line, uughghh, thats a pain to put right.

I sprayed the affected areas thoroughly with brake cleaner fluid in a spray can, that stuff is pretty good. Then hosed it down with a power washer.
So now I'm cleaning that whole side of the engine as best I can, and then running it, looking for leaks, cleaning more, looking for leaks. Access is pretty good if you remove the wings, which is easy.

gonna spend a bit of time and clean this up properly

So now we have the area in question. On this side there is an injection pump, which doesnt seem to leaking thankfully, and a vacuum pump, also doesnt seem to be leaking.

there might be some other bits I'm missing in my ignorance. There is an oil filter under there, I'll get some photos. That doesnt seem to be leaking either.

below is the leaking seal.

is it as simple as just unbolting it?

turns out its this part and the mechanism protrudes from fhe bottom. I can probably find an O ring to suit tomo in town.

power steering pump uses another O ring, so hopefully easy enough to sort. its sef contained too which is sweet.

They won't be very expensive from Iveco. But I expect the round ones are standard sizes.

Before you go on an expedition one of the things you should buy is a spare lift pump, rubber diaphram can go at any time,so carry a spare.........they arent expensive,Joe

I went as far as the local iveco parts supplier and they hadnt the correct O rings. One of them was the right diameter but looked way skinnier than the one that came off, and the other was completely wrong. They had a box of O rings, and I selected 2 that might fit, but the oval one for the lift pump i got completely wrong.

There is a specialist seals company in dublin, ill go in and see can i get replacements there.

When you undid the 3 bolts and pulled it away was there anything loose to fall off or was it all together??
Cheers,
John.

this part is after causing me a pain in the nuts.

I think I put it back on wrong, and now its starving the diesel injector pump of diesel, unless i crank the little lever on the unit by hand.
If I crank it for 30 seconds the truck will run for 30 seconds, then it will run out of fuel again and cut out.

There is a mechanism underneath it that i dont fully understand. I'm going to take it back off again and see what I can see, and try figure it out.

Its a bitch to get off. There are three bolts, the one on the engine side is hard to get to and very slow / tiresome to take on / off.

I'm going to make a tool for it, reckon ill cut up a spanner and re-weld it in a different configuration, so that i can more easily get to the bolt.
Its that gammy that its deserving of its own tool.

Aquatek to answer your question, it does come out in one piece.

I seem to have fixed the oil leak from the engine, so there is some measure of success. Dicey game, playing with the fuel system on diesels though.

Hi Ned,

I can't be of much help because the Iveco 4x4 doesn't have that lift pump. I wonder how it does not need it as the engine and pump are the same? Could it be bypassed? I am sure it must be there for a reason though. I think the 2 wheel drive has it. Maybe someone else can shed some light.

Dunno Graeme..... dont know. I mean it does work, and therefore is handy, if i could just get it to operate properly. Going to have to start the truck over the weekend so that i can winch on the new body, so will address it then.

so looking at this pic you would have to imagine that the black arm is turned by some sort of cam in the engine. I must have put it on wrong and now its not drawing fuel.

Did a huge amount of work on the truck over the weekend, hands / body are all sore now, sitting in work knackered l ol.
Its starting to look like a DROPS truck

Nearly ready to mount body, only thing left is this little lift pump in my way, and the rain. And the darkness.

So i took off the pump again, butr couldnt see how it wads put on wrong.... Im thinking now, that there is air in the fuel system, hence its cutting out. Will have to loosen some of the injectors and turn the key

not sure about doing that, its been a long time. How will i stop the engine from starting, while its turning over?

just to describe the symptoms, the engine starts, but wont idle properly, starts to cut out.

or

the engine starts, i try to keep it going, it stays going for a few mins, then dies.

any advice appreciated.
