Hi Guys

First of all what a great forum I have already learnt a lot from just skimming through.

I have a 1995 2.5l 59.12 which has been fully converted now just a few final tweaks and she is there. I'm now really struggling with a battery drain and was hoping that there is a post on here with instructions for a battery isolator. I have just started using forums so still not quite sure how to search properly.

I have a tacho fitted and this has never been an issue but I have read that people leave this open when not using van as it can drain the battery, is this correct? I'm not the most mechanically minded person however I'm really good at fitting out campers and working with all associated items.... water heaters 3 way fridges led lighting all aspects of 12v supply's and also use of solar panels so if I can help with these things please feel free to ask.

Thanks in advance Craig

Was it a bus or any other variant of the van before the conversion? Often the electric doors that were fitted cause the battery to drain pretty quickly.

Our battery goes flat in a few weeks if not used, haven't had time to look into it more than disabling the electric door would be interesting to know if the tacho stops using power when left open. I set the tacho mode so the red light turns off when the engine is off and it stops whirring.

Tacho will not drain battery in 48hrs. Set it to service I was told. (or was it sleep!)

When you sort it it is worth getting one of these http://www.force4.co.uk/waeco-perfectcharge-12v-35a-charger-m.html?utm_source=google_shopping&gclid=Cj0KEQjw9r7JBRCj37PlltTskaMBEiQAKTzTfBlhZafVtJI7HZrS4zQqDTRqClhTzALxlJ6X--TpeYAaAsJU8P8HAQ#.WS_7Aty1vZ4

Expensive but I have had no problems parking up for a long time. keeps both lesiure and vehicle batteries in a good state. That and solar! Must find the problem first.

take the negative earth lead of the battery when not in use for long time, untill you source leakage fault, this way it cant catch fire! through electrical short, not likely to but safer is better.

Could be a goosed battery and just not liking the tacho drain.
The tacho does drain the battery quite a bit but not in 48 hrs.
I personally fitted a battery isolator in the passenger foot well and isolate if its going to be lying for awhile.

I suppose to find the drain you would have to systematically isolate each of the circuits and check the draw with a clamp meter from the battery.

measure the current drain with a good meter and pull out the fuses one by one. Trouble is every time you open the door a light may go on which draws a very high current, when your meter is trying to measure a small current. I've never succeeded doing that.
Two tests for the battery:
1) Isolate it and measure the voltage twice a day to see if it has internal leakage.
2) Isolate or remove the battery. connect a voltmeter and and a headlight bulb and see how long it stays on for (above 11.7 volts). be careful, the light bulb gets hot.
