gear box issues

Hi All,
I'm fairly new to this forum and not sure if I've posted this query in the right section. sorry if its not.

After over 12months building my camper on a 40.10 4x4, today I took it out for its maiden voyage. Just a round trip of about 100 miles. It all went well apart from a bit of trouble with the gear box, basically I had trouble getting it into 3rd gear without grinding, both gearing up from 2nd and down from 4th. I was wondering if anyone knew if this is common or if there was something I could do, such as adjust the clutch or gear selector maybe. Other than this 3rd gear issue the gear box felt sound and all the other gears are easy to select and there is no slip at all on the clutch. I don't remember this issue being there when I bought the truck and drove it home.
Thanks
Nige

Hi,

that's certainly not normal - did you take the drive train apart during the rebuild? In particular anything to do with the clutch?

In any case you can check the adjustment of the clutch pedal, it should be roughly at the same height as the brake pedal. If it isn't you can adjust the bowden cable tension/length at the lever on the side of the gearbox. See maintenance manual, which you can download somewhere here.

Did you change the gearbox oil?
If yes, did you use the right type? The spec say GL 3 (Tutela) SAE 80W/90 (Mechanical gearbox oil containing non-EP anti-wear additives; meets specification API GL 4 SAE 75W80. E.g.Tutela Truck Gearlite). If you use the wrong type you can have symptoms like you describe them.
If no, change it - maybe it is wrong or too low at the moment.

Good luck
Raphael

p.s. Welcome, and yes, it is the right section - although sometimes it takes a while until you get a reply

Hi, Thanks for the info Raphael.
unfortunately in wasn't an oil or clutch issue. I've had it looked at by a couple of mechanics and both seem to think its the 3rd gear synchro ring that could be worn. I've now got he box out and will be taking it to get it stripped tomorrow.
Ill post the findings when I know more.
Thanks again
Nigel
