Hello, I have owned a 1997 49-10 welfare bus for about 4 years now and have being slowly converting it to a camper.
It has had some hidden issues which i have managed to sort but the main one is how slow it is.
I have had been reading in the forum that i am not the only one with this problom and i am aware it is a rear axle gear ratio issue.

Can i ask a few questions to see if other people have fixed this problom.

1. From reading other posts it seams i have a rear axle with a ratio R = 1:5,22 Z=9/47 (part no.7173881), can i buy the Crown and Pinion gears anywhere and forget about sourcing a complete axle?

2. I live in Ireland and very few of the old Iveco are over here being broke, what model of Iveco should i be targeting with the hope of finding the correct axle that can bolt up to my bus?

3. If i can change out the Crown and Pinion gears what price am i looking at for the components?

And last question, is there another way of keeping my hearing above 40MPH and going around 60MPH?

There are a number of methods to deaden the sound. None is a miracle cure, but they a ll help:
See my blog http://drmarkstardis.blogspot.co.uk/2011/04/sound-insulation.html

I have bigger tires, but I still cruise at 50mph (less than 2500 revs) mainly because of the dramatic increase in fuel consumption.

Very interesting site Mark. Yes I will try the sound deadening, I used it on a landrover and it also made a noticeable difference. I do need a bit more speed though so I will have to change out the diff I fear.

Here is another picture, I have still to install a panel over the seating area. This will contain the solar panel and pneumatic cylinder controls. Not too far off finishing it now.

Lots of the buses will be fitted with that ratio diff, look for panel van/luton vans of the same weight (especially the more powerful versions) to find a diff better suited to cruising.
