Hi there I have a 50C17 with an AGile gearbox. All seems fine whilst not towing but when I tow my Horse float all up 2 tonne with horse 2nd gear shudders and the main problem is reverse I only have to reverse around 30 meters and the clutch smells bad !! This happens all the time !! Has anyone any suggestions ?? I have had it bad to IVECO and they changed some electronics and the clutch flywheel but NOT the clutch plate as they said it was fine, but it happened again straight away....

I have a manual gearbox and tow a horsebox that normally weighs 2 tons and occasionally 2.8 tons (the limit of my van). Reverse gear is quite high, higher than 1st gear, around jogging pace, which means if I am reversing on grass or up an incline, I (and possibly your auto) are riding the clutch whilst putting quite a bit of power through it. I try and get off the clutch but at the vans idling speed in reverse you need to be very quick with your corrections and have a fair bit of space around you. With the full chassis on the Iveco I reckon it would be quite easy to fabricate a front tow bar, then you can push the trailer around using the lower first gear, plus its more manouverable. You may want to mount the towball on the offside chassis rail (i.e offcentre) as this would give you a view down the side of the trailer. Can't help with the second gear shudder though. |

I find the gearing of these vans pretty poor for manouvering, mine wont take off in reverse up hill loaded(about 7t) |

Thanks I forgot to mention that it is under factory warranty. Iveco is changing the Diff ratio better for towing so they say...BUT I have to pay for the burnt clutch plate as they say its a consumable item. Iveco says that this will fix the problem, but I dont think so but heres hoping.... |

A different diff ratio will help as it will make every gear lower, making pulling away easier, and quicker acceleration. On the downside, the revs will be higher at cruising speed, and mpg may go down if you sit in 5th on the motorway all day. On the Transits, the diff options are referred to as 'towing' and 'economy'. Vans with more powerful engines such as the 170 may be fitted with an economy type diff anyway as the extra power can overcome the higher gearing, but the clutch takes the extra abuse.
