Hi i am in the process of building my second campervan, this one much more the overland 4x4 type. :)

I have found a 40.10 4x4 dropside and will fit a GRP body to form the living space.

I have a few questions about this truck if you can help.

#1 - Is it possible to remap/chip these vehicles (guessing pre-ecu?) or other such tuning to get more than 100bhp out of her?

#2 - How hard is it to get the weight reclassified down to 3,500kg?

#3 - Is this truck worth 11k?

1 previous owner, just 15k miles on the clock and is like new. It seems a lot for something built in 1990 but i am aware these rare 4x4 trucks hold value and are very sought after, plus the low mileage to boot... maybe it is...

Thanks in advance, Dave.

That's a cracking looking truck and will be a great base for a serious camper. I've no idea about the value though, I guess

it's worth what someone will pay for it. You're not going to find a better one that's for sure.

As for tuning, as you say there is no ECU - so nothing to remap.

It is possible to fit an intercooler from a 40.12, 35.12 etc which will give another 20bhp hence the xx.12 as opposed to xx.10

for the 100bhp models. The injection pump needs to be adjusted for extra fuel also.

I think the weight re classification should be a paper exercise and fairly straightforward, there is a company that does this

but I can't remember their name, if I find it I'll let you know.

Thank you very much for your help, looks like she could be the one then... :)

When you say the pump needs to be adjusted what does this entail, are new parts needed or a fiddle with some screws?

Thanks, Dave.

Thanks, that's the company I was trying to remember! http://www.svtech.co.uk/lightcomm.html

As far as I know, its just a matter of adjustment rather than new parts for the pump. I did have the details but
a recent computer collapse resulted in me losing all sorts of stuff!

Hi does look a great truck but it does seem rather expensive. This is only my opinion so please feel free to ignore this comment!!! If you check out the Nene Overland website they have a 4x4 Iveco overland camper with 31,000km on the clock. Sorry I'm not sure how to post a link. It looks fantastic and is priced at £19,995. I wish I had the money. Considering the amout of work and money required to turn the fire truck into a camper this would appear to be a good buy. If some one with better IT skills than me could post a picture that would be brill. Cheers Antony

Thanks again for your replys, that does look like a good deal. Having build a camper before and having all the time in the world it is something i want to do again. I also like having the camper customized to my exact requirements. I agree the 4x4x is looking on the expensive side. It's been advertised for nearly 2 months and from the conversations ive had he hasnt had much interest. He's dropped it just a grand in that time. I'd be wanting to pay no more than 7k i think. I might just offer him that or sit and wait it out and hope it drops and i get lucky. Thanks.

Well i made my move, got told how two others the same sold for more just last week bla bla bla and how it cost over 50k new.

All pie in the sky if you ask me, if two others sold why has he had this 2 months, do these traders really think the public are that nieve.

Cant think many people want one of these so asking super top money is stupid.

What would you guesstimate it's value at? Cheers, Dave.

Hi, no idea about the price, but an example with this low mileage is very rare and things do tend to go wrong at higher milages. So you end up saving mony on the long run. Some things that are mileage related and go wrong:
- rubber bushings in the torsionbar suspension (and in general). A bitch to replace! (torsionbars are appr 1000 euro excl VAT each!)
- front drive shafts. They are unaffordable (2900 euro excl VAT each!) and some parts are obsolete at Iveco. (freewheel hub)
- these are just some examples. Remember, all 4x4 specific parts are extremely expensive!
Raising poweroutput would not be my main concern. 100 hp is enough to get the car to it's max cruising speed of 90 km/hr on the motorway. The whole drivetrain ratio is very short so this is probably what you would be looking for to improve. The only way to do this is increase the tiresize. For this you would like 255-100R16 tires which add 13% but you might also want to use 6,5 inch rims instead of the 5,5 inch. They do mount on the narrow rims, but it depends on your MOT regulations. To make the tires fit you need to cut out the fenders and raise the suspension. At the rear you won't have problems since you have to make a new body anyway. There is not a great choise in these tire dimensions and they are very expensive. Alternatively you can mount 255-85R16's. On the weight, it will be hard to keep it under 3500 kg, maybe for registration but on the road you will probably be overweight! My van with simple camper interior and water an extra fuel tanks is allready 3500kg.
Good luck!
