So i guess you don't need to top up coolant,is temerature gauge reading normal or hot when you go off road? it sounds like it's getting quite hot. and when being driven on road is engine temp normal .

Try putting a coolant flush through the system and put fresh coolant back in,it may have got a bit of oil into the coolant via head gasket, however this does not mean the gasket has gone just a bit oil got past one of the seals.

yeah have changed the colant because it was a horrible brown colour and dirty looking the engine does not run hot well its not hot on the gauge takes long time to get the fan to cut in it does not boil up it just seems to drop bit out through the pipe but the system is very presurised can hear it makin funny noise have used the van for a year and has got no worse but do not want to keep using it if goin to do lot damage but do not no what is wrong with it as not comming up as head gasket but there is nothing else it can be

If the old coolant was quite brown then it sounds like the it has been topped up with just water as apposed to coolant, how long have you owned it for? it's sounds like classic engine loosing water on some fashion just being topped up with tap water .which will not help it will corrode the head/block and bring on head gasket problem. It's common on Toyota Previa as engine is underneath and when they get water leak from the same pipe on top of the engine it's engine out to get to it so owners just top up with tap water which ends up blowing head gasket. It's probably best to get head gasket tested.

If the system is pressurised and you can hear a hissing sound from the coolant tank when the engine is turned off then I would suspect a head gasket leak .

I had the same ( on a different van ) .

I ignored it and ended up having to replace the gasket and the cylinder head .

Get the water system gas checked to rule out a blown head gasket .

Any garage should be able to so a sniff test... They just take a water sample from the header and the solution changes colour if there are any combustion gases dissolved in the water. takes a couple of minutes, you can probably buy them in Halfords as well.

No combustion gases = head gasket OK. obviously best to test the old coolant.

What year is your van?

have had a the combustion test done and it did not show up any gases have changed coolant and does not run hot on or off road van is a 53plate have been using the van for a year like it as do not want just replace head gasket and find it is something else it is not a hissing sound it is a gurgling noise when you are parked up after going cross bumpy field

Yes it's probably ok then if it's not using water and drives with no issues ect my one gurgles on occasion when it's hot but that's not problem for me . it may be when you go off road you are going slow so the temperature will go up, my one is the same in heavy traffic as long as it's not getting to hot on gauge it will most likely be ok.

May be worth just taking it to dealer and let them have look if head gasket test showed to be ok then may be expansion tank cap is faulty. if temperature is stays very steady then would not think there is blockage in radiator or heater matriz . but it's just guess work i dont know where you live but i go to http://ewsmithgarage.co.uk/ there excellent and not expensive.

Are you topping up the water after each time? Could just be overfilled and pushing out the excess? The coolant will be pressurised to a degree...increases its boiling point.
