I had this problem, turned out the fan just doesn't turn on until the gauge almost touched the red! I has checked loads of stuff and replaced the temp sender before I let it get hot enough to activate the fan.

If you undo the connector behind the fan and apply 12v you should hear a loud click, this is the electromagnetic clutch engaging... If the engine is running this will cause the fan to spin up.

Hi,

The fan is activated at over 96oC and deactivated at under 84oC.
Often the fan is not to blame that the engine heats up too much, but you can check..
Electromagnetic (fan) coupling is powered by fuse number 5, the relay no. 25336 (see fuse box and relays diagram), then connects with the engine harness thru the connector 72030 (located behind the battery) .
Power wires are: the positive: green 8879 code and the negative: brown 0000 code.
The engine harness began from the connector 72030 and ends at alternator.
You can check the wires with the above code not to be broken, starting from connector (located behind the battery).

Hi, if it is a fan problem causing the overheating, the van will only overheat in heavy traffic or when driving slowly in 1st or 2nd gear. At higher speeds the fan is redundant as air coming through the grill will cool the radiator.

As quoted above, the fan is driven via the auxiliary belt, and engages/disengages via an electromagnet. You should see a couple of wires leading to the fan, and a connector. Unplug the connector and apply 12v and you should hear a clunk, if you do this whilst the engine is running the fan will start. On my van I cut off a redundant connector that was strapped up to the loom near the wiper linkage so that I plug it into the fan wiring and wire it to turn the fan on manually, the engine gets quite near the red when I am towing a heavy trailer at low speeds. I only did this as I thought the temp sensor was faulty.
