Hi all, my first post......

I'm looking to buy a 35c14 crewcab tipper for my tree surgery business, I will be towing my chipper which weighs just under a ton. I have been warned off the 2.3 engines due to reliability but finding it difficult to find a decent 2.8 or 3.0. Was just wondering what your thoughts are, any advice on what to look for etc
I had found a pristine 35c14 and the dealer said he would hold it but sold it over the phone as i was on route to buy it!! ^o)

Hi,

COMPOSITION OF MODELS
35 = maximum admissible weight (3.5t)
C = Twin rear wheels
14 = engine power (136 HP)
Daily 35C14 has only 3.0L engine (F1CE0481A), 136 HP.
Variants same class:
Daily 35C13 has only 2.8L engine (8140.43S), 125 HP.
Daily 35C15 has only 2.8L engine (8140.43N), 150 HP.
Daily 35C17 has only 3.0L engine (F1CE0481B), 166HP.
Daily 35C13 and 35C15 are model year 2000.
Daily 35C14 and 35C17 are model year 2003.
Engine 2.3 L has maximum power of 120 HP, so only on models 35/40X10 and 12 (rarely 13).
Nb.
X= L,or S, or C.
S = Single rear wheels
L = Light with single rear wheels
C = Twin rear wheels

There doesn't really seem to be a trend that the 2.3L is any less reliable than the 3.0...they both seem pretty sturdy. And even the 2.3l single rear wheel has a class leading 2800kg tow limit so you should be fine.

2.3L twin rear wheel is 3000kg, 3.0L twin wheels are king of the hill with a tow capacity of 3.5t.

Not so sure on the 2.8L tow limits but its a less refined engine.

Oh really? I was wondering this. The thing about tree surgery is that it's not really built for 3.5t vehicles IMO, but due to the costs and hoops of running anything larger I don't have a choice at the moment. The issue is that once I have built a alloy box for the back to hold woodchip, and filled up with chip, sometimes wet, and the chipper, my total train weight could be quite high and I think it might be worth waiting the extra time for the larger engine. Do you think that the 2.3 would be up to the job?
So the 3.0 is better than the 2.8? and what is the difference between hpi and hpt?

hpt is a tad more powerful, it has a variable vane turbo. rare though.

Train weight for a 35s12 is 6300kg, up to 7000kg for the 3.0L.

Beware the low payload though, its heavily built on a ladder chassis, so it has the lowest payload of any 3.5t van. A mwb single rear wheel panel van has approx 1400kg payload, a lwb dual rear wheeled van with a 3.0 engine drops to around 900kg. You'll have adjust these to cater for a chassis cab.

If you are already using a tacho is there anything to stop you going for something like a 50c15?

Ok I shall keep a tab on that. I'm not on a tacho, don't need one under 3.5t. I would love to run a 50 but they changed the licence a month before I passed my test, it will cost me the best part of 2k to get a 7.5 license. And I don't fancy the 6 weekly checks either!

Just a heads up, for towing a trailer commercially behind a 3.5 tonner you normally have to have a tacho or fill out a w20 book for driving under domestic rules. I have to fill out a w20 daily as I tow a cable drum trailer occasionally.
