Replacing front shocks

Need to replace the front shocks on a 54 plate 35s12.

I think there are two types of front suspension, mine has a leaf spring across the vehicle. When I unbolt the shock do I need to support the suspension or is it already at the limit of its travel. I don't want to unbolt the shock and then find I don't have the means to compress the spring in order to fit the new shock!

Also, one of my shocks has about 4mm of vertical movement at the lower mount/bolt, will this mean the bolt hole has been elongated or will tightening the bolt fix the movement. I can tap the bolt up and down using a hammer. If the hole is elongated it looks like the mount is just bolted to the lower arm, I guess I can just order that?

The spring will be supporting the vehicle. The damper should not be fully extended at limit of suspension travel or it would 'bottom 'every time. Best to put a jack under the suspension 'just in case'

I would be more concerned at the elongated bolt hole unless the other side is like that for manufacturing adjustments.

Has the bolt been loose for a while?

Yes I suspect its been loose for a while. I mentioned the knocking noise to a garage a while back but they suggested it was something (can't remember what) but it didn't really matter and was a pig to replace!

Time to see if I can get the shock bolts off with just a couple of socket sets...
