Hi,
could any one give me advice on replacing the seals and gasket on my rear diff. I can find the gasket, but dont understand is it a seal or bearing that stop the oil leaking onto the drive shaft? i rang a iveco dealer and they priced £80 for hub bearing part number 7187566. is this the right part or is it called a axle oil seal?

any help would be great

regards

joe

Hi,

There is a seal behind the drive shaft attachment part. Might be a special one with a steel ring on both sides: one is set on the pinion axle (the seal rotate on it) and the other sets on the differential case when you set the part in.

But before trying this kind of work check if the vent of the axle is not plugged with dirt or something. If it is, some pressure will be built-in the case every time it heats up and oil will leak at the weakest point: wheel bearing or shaft bearing.

Remove the vent and blow through it to see if it's plugged

Cheers

Don't know the specifics for your axle as they do differ but on 40c 15 the oil seal is part of the bearing, sitting between the two races.
If you can read the code on the bearing you my find one cheaper at a bearing specialist.

Again 40c15 does not have seal or gasket on drive-shaft/hub flange, just sealant.

HTH :)
