Blooming heck, i was just about to start a thread about this as im in the same position as you here. I have the prop dis connected but cannot get the nut on the end of the pinion shaft to budge at all. Had it red hot today with 2x blowtorches on it and trying it with one of those battery powered buzz guns but it just wont move. |

I've got the same problem with leakage from the large diff cover. Was going to clean it up and put plastic metal on it? Do you think it would do? |

I think you might be talking about the cover plate on the other side of the diff that i think should have a gasket, but when i removed mine there was no gasket present, just sealed with some black sealant. |

the diff pinion nuts are not LH threads but the are tight. make sure you have peened the locking part f the nut back or you risk damaging the threads on it, Also advise fitment of a new nut Will Edited by Derbywill, Feb 28 2012, 09:01 PM.

Finally managed to get the nut off, with the help of a 36" breaker bar from machine mart. Halfshafts out and diff out. Now i cant for the life of me get the pinion shaft moving back out the diff housing. It says to knock out the way with a bronze punch, well iv been hitting it pretty bloody hard but cannot get it moving. Any suggestions?. |

Okay i finally gave in and removed the whole axle. Once this was out then a few skelps with a big hammer and the pinion shaft shot out. The bearings for this were not colapsed as i thought they were going to be. However they were shot, and had the worst pitting i think i have ever seen on roller bearings. Axle is now rebuilt and back on the van. This has not been used yet but im sure there is far less backlash. Without getting into the sun and planet gears actually inside the diff and the shimming involved in this (that i think is beyond me) i dont think there is much more i can do. Just need to see what its like once on the road, if the knock when changing gears/ coming on/off power is gone. |

Re Diff oil seal The one thing nobody seems to mention when removing the nut is the fact that you should bolt a bracing bar on the prop flange (diff side) to take the force as you undo the nut.........you risk chipping or damaging the diff or pinion if you dont. I made one up out of 10mm x40mm flat steel, two holes in it to line up with top two in flange then added another piece diagonally to third of four holes , I had to cut a notch out to allow socket to get onto nut, then turn the diff flange untill the bracing bar is touching against road spring (you fit the bar by using three of the prop bolts) I used a 3/4 drive t bar with about four feet of scaffold tube slid over it.........hey presto nut undone with no risk of damage to pinion or diff, common sense tells you which way to set the bar up against the road spring to lock the diff flange in place.dont forget to jack one wheel up to allow you to turn the diff flange to the right position. A new diff and pinion are a lot of money !!! you might get away with it be its an expensive gamble. Hopefully I have attatched a picture of the one I made ,the slabs are two feet so that will give you a idea of size..sorry about including my feet! Anyways hope this is helpfull to you all.regards Paul Sorry could nt down load picture even with camera set on lowest setting .... Edited by ivecojoe, Sep 17 2012, 11:08 AM.
