Help

We have just got back from a trip following the Orange River in South Africa from it's source in Lesotho to the River mouth at Oranjemund in Namibia, A very enjoyable trip except for ten hours during which time we were stuck up to our axles in the rising river with a suspected CV joint failure. has anyone experienced this? With the free wheel hubs locked I can turn the half shaft but the wheel doesn't turn. I have checked the free wheel hubs and they do work. The affected wheel is the front right hand side.
The pic on the avatur was taken after we spent about five hours trying to get out in 2 wheel drive, we were tired and had not moved an inch. we were pulled out of the river at 23h00 by a four wheel drive tractor.

Any advice would be appreciated

Cheers

Roger

Hi,

The free wheel coupling mechanism is probably defective. Often, because of the mud, dust, or rust, you can not rotate the free wheel selector until the end and the CV joint remains semi engaged, resulting in destruction of the coupling mechanism.
In the download section of the forum is available - Daily workshop manual 1990 to 1998. You will find the information needed to repair the front axle.

To all who helped

Mnay thanx for the advice , the problem is cured.

The first thing I suspected was the Freewheel hub and checked it, I even swapped the left and right hubs but it made no difference, the drive was not coming through from the drive shaft to the wheels hence my suspecting either a broken halfshaft or a damaged cv joint. When you consider that we are pushing 100hp through components built as sturdily as these are, i could not believe it. I eventually removed and stripped the cv with a little persuasion from a handy 4 pound hammer and some rather seedy words of encouragement. I found that the drive shaft from the diff to the cv inner had slipped out (DONT ASK ME HOW THIS HAPPENED) once again a bit of gentle persuasion with the 4pounder cured the problem and now I have my 4x4 capabilities back again.

once again thanx

Roger

what steering rack do you have.

many trucks have been fitted with 4x2 racks and we suspect they allow a greater lock on the wheel and therefore issues with the cv joints. sounds like you have been lucky

Thanx Rich

Yes I do have an exceptional turning circle, way better than my Toyota Hilux 4x4, I think I,ll have to be more careful when turning in 4x4 mode.

Jimmers there are more pics on the blog "royinzambia"

ciao

Thanx Rich

I have applied for membership, hope it comes through soon. Have you done many off-road trips in your Van? below see the different phases of the rebuild.

Yo Rich

The Unit is not demountable, it is permanent with a walk way through to the cab, it took about a year to build but as you know the job's never done. I never mounted the body to the chassis as there is to much movement between the cab and the chassis, that is why i kept the van floor, the unit is bolted to the old floor and i have enclosed the open sides for storage.

there is a series of pics of the build up posted on the yahoo group you recommended's photo album.

have you fitted your snorkel yet, is it an off the shelf part, or have you made it up yourself?

If you have a back problem aren't you afraid of the hard ride of your van over gravel roads,

I love real off-road challenges but hate badly corrugated gravel/dirt roads.

I have attached 2 pics, one with SWAMBO (She who always must be obeyed), here you can see the roof carrier we use for game viewing, it is accessible from inside via the air vent, all we take up is an umbrella, two chairs and a cooler box filled with frosties. The other is of us free camping off the beaten track.

Where do you intend going next, are there very many off-road destinations in the UK or do you intend heading for Europe and Asia. It's a pity about the ever increasing fuel price, makes travelling so damn expensive. Send us some pics of your interior and snorkel conversion.

Cheers

Roger

Interesting.... i'll go look at the groups photo album.... I own and moderate the group so i should have noticed yor photos going on......

Hard - the suspension ......... not after your previous vehicle was an ex military cab over landrover

See here for details http://www.jamesuk.net/tiggurr_101.html

Back is OK now after op, its the stuff afterwards that nearly killed me but we hope to be travelling / living in the truck soon , and travelling all over , eastern europe is probabily the 1st destination, then maybe africa or aus (i'll buy a truck in aus - too expensive to ship)

I think we all hate corregations - the thought of what its doing to our trucks, tyres , dampers so hot you could fry eggs on them and the damage to us too

Thankfully diesels alot cheaper in north africa, never gonna beat libya though at 5 US cents a litre

Like the idea of the game viewing platform but eating chilled breakfast cereal up there ......

Snorkel is the Iveco one i was lucky to find someone with a 2nd hand one sitting in a warehouse in belgium

I'll post up the pics in a more relevant thread

"dampers so hot you could fry eggs on them"

Slow down and let the tyres down a bit and slow down usually fixes that problem and if that doesn't work, slow down.
