Try adding an extra thick ground cable from engine to min of batterie.

It sounds as though your engine cooling fan is not working and the reason the engine temp goes down while travelling is due to the increased air flow from moving along.
You need to to get the engine up to operating temp and take a look to see if the viscous fan is working, my guess is that it isn't (please be sure to keep your fingers well clear of the fan blades in case it should start to turn)
Hope that helps,
John.

So long as its not going in the red the temp will fluctuate.
Another thing is have you flushed out your water system and added the correct amount of anti freeze / summer coolant.

Ive noticed on mine that the fan seems to spin quite slowly, could a worn/loose fan belt cause this?

Hi

^ If viscous fan .. no.
If viscous worn or fails, fan will windmill all the time .. should feel restriction to turn when hot.

Reasonable rise on temp gauge when standing in heat and running is normal.

In car engines that have severe problem like this suspect water flow (ie through rad core) or water pump.
High mileage and/or age might point to replacement rad reqd.

I'm not sure about the 2.8 engines, but the 2.3 is not a viscous fan, its engine driven and has an electromagnetic clutch.

Heating up at idle and then cooling at speed will either be a faulty fan, stuck thermostat/sludged up radiator (when the temp is high, the rad should also be evenly hot, this will rule out the stat and sludge)

Its worth noting though that the temperature can get pretty close to the red on the temp gauge before the magnetic clutch engages and the fan starts.

That is mine all over and it runs fine I was stuck in traffic on the M1 for almost an hour at a stand still making the journey over 3 hrs and mine was going closer to the red and then dropping no problem yet any other van I would have started to panic!

My 2.8 has the clutched fan.

A few years ago I became worried that it wasn't cutting in (temp heading over 90 when queuing after a longish run in the height of a hot summer) and so resorted to opening the window, turning the heater on full and full fan. WOW it gets hot in the cab!!! This seamed to pull the temp down and I carried on like this for a couple of years as each time the van went in for a cambelt service I forgot to ask the mechanic to check it. As I only had the situation a couple of times a year it slipped my mind.

And then I read somewhere that the fan is meant to be engaged at around 94 degrees, I had been panicking at about 92 and turning on my mobile sauna!! So at the next opportunity I let the temp continue to rise and...... the clutch cut in just as it should, the fan did its job and the temp fell...... Oh what a fool..... all that heat into the cab, all that sweat.....

I have had exactly the same problem on my 65C15 (2.8 engine) and have tried everything. After working correctly when I first had it, it became erratic by usually showing high temp BUT ONLY WHEN ACTUALLY RUNNING. If the igition was on without the engine running, the temp showed normal. As soon as it started...up it went. I tried everything: checking earths, new cables directly to the speedo head and it still played up meaning ( apologies for thinking out load) that it may be a fault within the head unit which kicked in only when the engine was running which meant an instrument which also only worked when the engine was running...such as the rev-counter ..or...some engine unit whicj only generated or required a current when running...such as the fuel pump, oil switch...The list goes on but rather than spend a fortune on anew head unit, I purchsed a standard over the counter temp guage and fitted it into a home hade housing in the top small heater pipe. Now, whatevr the head unit guage is saying I ignore as the new one is 'stand alone' and alwyas tells me what is going on.

Incidentally, thanks to all who contributed to the Cruise Control thread. Fitted mine recently and 1000% better than the old cable operated one and a fraction of the price.
