what van to tow 3.5 ton; looking for a van with 3.5 ton tow limit

You will need an Iveco with a 3.0 engine and twin rear wheels, from what I've seen, all Dailys with this combination will tow 3500kg. The Daily is the only van that can tow this weight!

To get a 2000kg payload in the van, you will need to be looking for a van over 3.5t, maybe 4.5 or 5t.

So you need to be looking/searching for something like:

50c18 - 50=5.0t gross weight, c=twin rear wheel, 180=180bhp
45c17 - 4.5t gross weight, twin wheel, 170bhp.

s denotes single rear wheel, but you won't find this on any van over 3.5t anyway. I think the 3.0 engines come in 15, 17, 18, and 20 flavours, anything smaller will probably be a 2.3l and they have a lower towing weight. The 20 is 205bhp but rare. If you need a big box van you may even need to look at the 65c which is a 6.5t van.

You can double check a van will tow 3500kg by checking the vin plate under the bonnet, the top two figures are gross weight and train weight, if you deduct the lower number from the higher number, the difference is the towing weight. A 5000kg van would therefore show a train weight of 8500kg. If you are driving on grandfather rights >7.5t (i.e. not an HGV license) you will have a train weight limit of something like 8250kg, so a fully laden 5t van and 3.5t trailer would not be covered by the license as it would be 8500kg.[/quote]"You will need an Iveco with a 3.0 engine and twin rear wheels, from what I've seen, all Dailys with this combination will tow 3500kg. The "Renault Maxity" which is the same van as a "nissan cabstar" (has to be twin wheel version) also has the 7t train weight but you would need to have a box body put on it to use as a van, as its only a chassis cab.... also it has the best payload of all the vans I looked when I brought my last iveco.... But New daily's have 3 years unlimited mileage warrenty.... As we do 100k miles per year, this was very much a deal clincher for me!!!!

Also if you are buying new you can order merc and vw vans with different rear axle so the can have 7t train, but you will pay a premium for it!!!

I just bought myself a 2008 35c15 3.0 which I chipped from 146hp to 186hp and fitted cruise control for long journeys. These are pretty good value vans for what you get and after owning lots of transits havn't looked back. Great for towing etc and never slows with hills etc. I know its a 7t gross train weight but does anyone know what it can carry on the back. Its a crewcab pickup with a 12ft bed.

I did try the 35c12 before buying this but it seemed as dull as dish water. Not sure if it was just that van or if they are all like that, but that kinda pushed me towards the 3.0 model, which is a bloody good engine! Miles better than my 2.4 125hp transit.

I have a 35c15 with a light weight ally car transporter body (total weight of body was about 140kg) standard cab and also has air suspension (which I am told is 40-50kg lighter than leaf springs) and I am just over 2t unladen!.... I would guess you can carry less than a ton with a standard pick up and a crew cab... also if you carry passengers, each one is prob at least 50kgs..... is it a tipper body?? cos that will make it even heavier!!

Did you have the chip fitted or was it already on the van?? If you fitted it, was the difference noticable??

Cheers for the info, it has a light alloy bed, non tipper thankfully. My transit crewcab pickup will carry 1.4t but I know this iveco is supposed to be less. Was hoping it would take a ton but no big issue if it can't, we only carry gates so its not often that we are near the ton mark.

I did the chip myself which was dead easy and it has made a massive difference. It was powerful before but now... You can adjust it depneding on how much power you want and where in the rev range it gives you the power. If someone else was going to drive it then perhaps I would think twice. But it is really smooth and I have set it to come in through out the whole rev range. £100 well spent!

Are you talking about a chip or tuning box you plug in yourself?

Mine is 180hp standard, wonder what these chips would do for me? Torque would be good?

sudesh.... 180bhp for a 3.5 ton van is more than enough, I have a 150bhp and tow a 3.5 ton trailer.... I run at 7 ton every day and the 150, does ok... she will hold 60mph up most hills (sometimes need a down shift).... I was considering a re-map to improve torque so I dont use so much fuel on the hills, I would imagine the 180bhp model barely notices any hill even fully freighted.... Dont waste your Money mate!! :)

Our Tuning box cost £101 delivered and well worth the pennies. For some reason our mpg used to be around 25 average but I decided to check it today and it was almost 28.5mpg with a light load of around 800kg. They say it can improve the mpg, I didn't believe it myself until now.... Last time I looked I think their 180hp box puts it at 226hp.

Yeah it does go very well and as you say, it barely notices the hill. But a bit better fuel consumption and more torque would be good, as I tow a 16ft car transporter now and again and depending on the vehicle that's on behind, it can be thirsty lol the torque would be good too for some hill climbs, although I can't say it struggles much to begin with.

180 to 226! That quite an increase although the torque would suit me best

Couldn't find any tuning boxes for my model though?

Have you a link?

Have a look on ebay at item number 320969298331, this is the company I used. Not sure if its the correct box for your van but they seem to sell all the tuning boxes. And I can confirm ours is spot on!

Thanks for the link.

That's the 175 hp model, same engine I guess but mine is 180 hp model.

However I contacted the guys direct and they have one to suit my van, so I made a purchase to see if it does anything lol. I guess a fuel increase would be nice but not overly bothered by that, torque does interest me though.

They said HP would be 233 and torque is 493.

I'll report back when I get it installed and do some tests.

I did adjust it round a little, I didn't try all the settings as I never had time. Plus I felt the one I put it on gave plenty more beef so was more than happy with the outcome :)
