ok. the prob was i opened up the adjusters on the drum brake too much. this caused the fuid level to lower throughout the system as it compensated for the void i created by opening the shoes too much. i think.
if you took off the brake drum, this is what they look like

these adjusters can be found behind two rubber tabs at the 6 o clock position on the back side of the drum brake (facing the differential)

open the tabs, and as your looking at it turn them in these directions:

left hand side of pic up, right hand side down, you are turning against the
ratchet, a squirt of Q20 before you try to adjust will loosen any rust and make
it easier

Aren't these adjusters automatic. You can release them to get the brake drum off, but once you apply the brakes they will self adjust after a couple of applications. Workshop manual says to occasionally do some firm stops in forward and reverse

hmmm. i dont think so. i took them apart to clean them, there is a spring mechanism, that i couldnt get my head around, but, the main parts are threaded, and i cant see how they would self adjust

Re brake adjusters, yes they are automatic, I took my truck in for vosa test a few years back the examiner got in said pedal was a bit low,drove forward stamped hard on the brakes then backwards did that a few times really hard and yes the pedal came right up,trouble is you wouldnt normally hit the brakes that hard in normal driving conditions,what I used to find was the pedal would slowly get lower then all of a sudden it would be right up again due to hard breaking ,so every now and then in your yard or somewhere safe going slow then stamp on them,it works !! Paul

I am having trouble with this mechanism also. I can't see how they should be self adjustable. Can anyone explain that? I was having a very deep sitting brakepedal as well. The manual says not to fiddle with them. The only instruction is to adjust the distance between the bolts to 83-85 mm. I measured mine in normalconditions and measured 94 mm. So apparently there is some self adjusting functionality? I was told that it is important to maintain the same distance of 0,4 to 0,8 mm between the liner and the drum on both sides.

What I used to do on mine as the so called self adjusters never seemed to work untill the pedal was really low and you had to really stamp ,as I said before,so used to jack it up leave wheels on tighten adjusters untill wheel jammed solid, thump the backplate with large hide mallet to centralise, adjust tighter a little more if poss,thump again,and then back off adjuster so there is virtualy no rub,sometimes you seemed to have to do this several times it seemed but it is the best way to get the shoes right up and central without rubbing ,common sense dictates you only do this if you already had the drums of previous and know the shoes are good and slaves are not leaking,it might not be in the manual but the test station always used to comment on how even my brakes were set and how powerfull for a five tonner,I prefered the old large drums on the back,you could have a decent hand brake set up unlike the pushbike shoes they use on the newer models.....you go to wales on a hillside with full load truck and trailer!!! you will see what I mean,certainly wouldnt stand behind to unload it,yep leave it in gear...but not really the answer is it,love modern discs but that handbrake set up is pathetic compared to the mk1 and larger mk2s.
