When I start my van and leave it ideling for say 20mins or so, the temperature needle never raises, it will only start to rise when there are reves over 1000rpm etc.

Does anyone else's van do this?

Would the suggest the thermostat needs replaced?

Hi Mate
I think you will find that quite normal, Diesels nowadays are very good at keeping engines cool, so if the engine overheats,
or runs cool under normal running then your thermostat is fine.

Many thanks for the reply and info. Guess its just normal then, once the an is moving, never any issues at all, just thought it a bit strange temp needle doesn't move when started and left idling a bit.

Yep quite normal. Its not recommended to allow the engine to warm up at idle anymore as particularly with diesels, they take an age to warm up.

Just start it and drive gently, within 3-5 minutes you will normally have a reading on the temp gauge. Almost all wear happens when the engine is cold, so a 5 minute warm up during gentle driving is much preferable to letting it idle on cold gloopy oil for 20 minutes or more.
