Hi all, Towards the end of last year the drivers door on the last couple of times it unlocked was a bit sticky. Central locking motor would struggle, key would need a few wiggles close, open, close, open before the latch would pop up. Stupidly I didn't heed the warning, and now it refuses to unlock! Doh!! Central locking operates, I hear the motor, the catch moves slightly. Using the key causes the catch to move slightly however it feels like the mechanism is giving some resistance. From inside pulling the interior catch (to open the door) makes the pull tab move but refuses to go up fully. Pulling the top pull tab and it refuses to go all the way up. Pulling inside catch and tab together, wiggling, forcing etc etc, it refuses. So I have the joy of working on a door, getting inside it without being able to open it - anyone done this? Anyone give some pointers or diagrams on how to take the door cards off to gain access? I'm being lazy - thought I'd ask, I'll strip the passenger door down to figgure out how it all comes apart and then try and repeat on the shut drivers door from inside, wedged between the drivers seat and door - there is a little space luckily. Thanks all in advance. |

Dont know whats jammed but I would unbolt drivers seat and then sit on floor to work on it, cant imagine you could get the door card of otherwise. it will be hard enough even then. Paul |

Joy! Getting to the rear bolt of the drivers seat will be fun, but will make access a lot easier. |

Hi all, Okay I managed to fix this and had a bit of luck also! Wound down the window and pulled both the internal handle and external handles together, the door popped open. The fault was caused by the exterior handle which had a plastic arm at a 90 degree 'L' from the back of the plastic pull handle, this in turn moves a second 'L' shaped metal arm which has a spring return. This second 'L' arm attaches to the pull rod which operates the lock mechanism. It appears the factory who built this didn't add any form of lubrication so over time the spring has corroded and this was stopping it from returning, and in turn holding the lock in a state where it wouldn't allow anything to lock it, unlock it or open it. Luckily mine all cleaned up nicely and with some proper lubrication (I used a white grease) it all works efficiently again. This is likely to affect your van! If I didn't get the door open, the repair would have been a pig! The clue to the problem starting is the door handle not springing back - if there is a little slack, ie you can push the handle in, ie the spring isn't doing it fully I recommend you take the hint and take the door apart before everything gets stuck! Took the door card off. Had to remove one of the internal glass rails (three fixing points) to gain access to the third fixing for the exterior handle. Three 10mm bolts hold the outer door handle on. The connecting rod between the lock mechanism and the door handle is easily unclipped by rotating the clip off the rod and then pulling the rod outwards. Take the door handle off, remove the 8mm nylock nut, take apart, clean, greese and then re-assemble. You'll notice the handle now pulls back strongly and no play. Re-assemble in reverse. The previous owner of the van, a friend of mine has several of them - and when I mentioned it to him, this has happened before to him! Upshot is now I can get in and out of the drivers door again - without climbing through the passenger door. Tonight I'll do the other side. |
