Hello everyone, First time posting here so please be nice!!! lol I have a lwb iveco daily 2.3hpi and basicly im very disapointed init. So im after some help, It feels totaly underpowered i put my foot down in 4th/5th gear and it struggles up past 60mph even when empty. There is no smoke or anything i runs smooth as hell and i have given it a service. It currently runs 26-29mpg at 65mph on motorways but goes down to 25 on A-roads. I have been putting a bottle of millers additive thought it over the last week and seams to have helped a little. but this van is nothing compare to my last Daily '55' mk3 plate. Any ideas on what it could be?? Also i have an altenator that needs replaced which i can do my self is there once on here who has done it and have a sequence that i coulkd use? And last but not least....... the viscus fan does it kick in electronicly on this model or is it ment to run all the time?? i notices a wire coming out the back of it which runs off down the engine and it was puzzling me? Thankyou all for your time and help in advance! Gary Edited by EuroGary, Feb 6 2013, 01:50 PM.

Welcome. Simple thing to check for the performance issue is that the air filter is clean. Also, what sometimes affects older vehicles is the intake tube between turbo and intercooler can collapse on itself under power, but this is difficult to diagnose as you can't see it when driving! Any fuelling issues would normally bring up the engine management light. Alternator, I replaced mine and it was quite self-explanatory. I think I managed it with the fan/radiator in situ, I put a socket and bar on the nut on the tensioner and when you push down, the nut doesn't move but it acts to push the whole tensioner against its spring and gives you some slack in the belt. It is fiddly/a long reach to get the belt on and off but I managed it. I can't remember if I had to remove anything to get the alternator out, but if I did I managed it with a socket set. Change the V groove belt at the same time. The fan is freewheeling normally, when the temperature needle approaches the red (in most cases it almost gets onto the red) the wires going into the fan activate an electromagnetic clutch and it will become engine driven (i.e. its not an electric fan). We get lots of people posting as they think its not working, but it just cuts in at the last minute. Normally the fan will never run unless you are in heavy traffic or towing a heavy load up a hill. If it cuts in when driving you will know about it as it makes a good roar if you are climbing with plenty of revs

Thankyou Spooky the fan belt info is much help as i was worried about it not turning, I have replaced the altenator which took me 12 mins from start to finish what an easy job! Also found my power drain was down to a buggered intercooler so picked up a 2nd hand one and what a diffrance. But what a pig to strip out and change over but all done now! What is the mpg supposed to be from a 35s12 2.3 hpi? Gary |

MPG depends on usage - use the search box (top right) and you'll get a variety of hits. My 35S12 07 plate gives me about 30-32 MPG, mainly about town. Good to hear about your success with the intercooler!

My MK2 2.8 35C10 gives me an average of 29mpg ( I do about 2000 miles a week) , this is with about 75% of the time fully loaded. I keep to 60mph , but it will get there really quick , and keep accelerating if you want. Have managed 33mpg a few times on long A road trips. |
