Filling Tank Problem; Solution?/

Hi Folks,

From the start, I have experienced problems filling my fuel tank with diesel.

On one occassion, it took one & a half hours to dispense 62 litres.

I was convinced that somehow there was an "air-lock" somewhere causing this.

I asked around at the Motorhome club (there are about 12 regular memebers that attend our monthly rally with the IVECO based DISCOVERER motorhomes.
It appears that one regularly has the same problem, a couple "sometimes" others did not know what I was talking about.

I was recently at the dealer of these motorhomes, who are also authorised dealers / service agents for IVECO.

The response from them was that they are aware of the problem on "some" of the vehicles but had not found the solution.

On friday morning, I was at a 'OUTDOOR SHOW" where the DISCOVERER Motorhome manufacturer had a stand.
On their stand, they had a representative of IVECO and a new Iveco chassis with only the cab, which is the donor vehicle for their Motptrhomes.
I chatted with the IVECO representative, who was surprised to hear of the problem.

Crawling under the vehicle, I had a look at what could be the cause.

The main pipe from the filler cap, loops down, well below the level of the "entry" pipe on the tank.
I concluded that when filling up, the diesel was accumalating in the resultant "loop" and resdulted in the problem.

I took "cable-ties" and lifted the pipe to "eliminate the build-up of diesel in the pipe, hoping that there would be unrestricted flow. Being designed as it is, I was unable to total achieve my objective and there was still a bit of a dip in the pipe that diesel could accumulate in.

Friday afternoon, I went to a fill my tank.
Within seconds, the petorl attendant stated that the tank was full, after only dispensing FOUR litres.
I pointed out that the tank should take about SIXTY litres, as it was nearing EMPTY.

Realising that my cable-tie fix was not working, I crawled under the vehicle and removed my solution.

I then lifted the "breather" pipe which goes from the top of the tank to the filler cap.
Suddenly there was a gurgling of fuel flowing!

Immediately, there was absolutely no problem with the rate the fuel was flowing into the tank.

CONCLUSSION
At some time or other, it is possible for fuel to enter the breather pipe and accumulate in it as a result of the way the breather pipe is routed. This prevents the flow of air out of the tank, while filling is taking place.

The breather pipe is now "cable-tied" in such a way that no diesel is able to accumulate within the pipe, restricting or limiting the filling process.

On monday, I was telling my partner about the story, when one of my staff members walked into the office. Before I could get to the part about the finding, my staff member said that the problem is the breather pipe! he happened to have spent time in the USA driving trucks and it was a problem regularly encountered on the trucks. (The problem being the "breather" pipe being "blocked" by fuel entering it.)

I hope this will help somebody out there.

Have a great day.

Ive just bought a new Daily and had the same problem. I also cable tied the 'breather' pipe higher up because of the diesel kept coming back up the filler pipe. Its been fine ever since :D

Hi All,

From the TWO responses, one has experienced the problem and one never experienced the problem.

That means 50% have and 50% have not.

Conclussion is that 50% of you out there have or will experience the problem.

Have a great day.

Thus far, two out of the three responses, have indicated that they have experienced this problem.

I am sure there are many more.

Please respond with your experiences.
