Possible Clutch Issues - On Its Way Out

Just today I noticed that when going into 5th and 6th, the engines wines too much and feels like the clutch is slipping, it will also automatically select natural when it does this too.

Its not as bad when warmed up, but still has the slipping feeling/noise when going into 5th and 6th.

Van has just turned 60k last week.

Could it be anything else? or would this be a clear issue of the clutch going bad?

Also I don't get any warning lights on the computer and on initial start up, the computer shows gearbox check as OK.

Thats how mine started, slipping in high gears and gradually getting worse. Try provoking it and watch the rev counter, once you feel its revving higher than it should for the given speed, take your foot off the gas and watch to see if the rev counter falls more than a fraction.

Mine is a smaller clutch than yours but I was getting quotes between £340 and £560 (Independent commercial V Iveco Dealer)

Cheers buddy for the reply.

Just did some more testing and its slipping in 4th too, so have it booked in with Iveco for tomorrow. Rather have sorted sooner than later and before I'm left stranded somewhere.

It's about £1000 for the clutch and labour; £600 odd for the clutch and £300 odd for labour, but they did mention some discount too.

I was sceptical when I first joined them (£12.00 per year through the Caravan Club) - but they've more than paid for that in costs both at my local Vauxhall and Iveco dealerships.

A chap called Paul (lazy S England accent, but sharp as a pin) has always dealt with my queries, and always come up trumps.

I'm not connected with them - honest!

Is your van the 'Agile' semi-auto box? Always wondered how well they stood up to wear and tear - most automatic clutches I've come across seem to be a bit heavy on the linings...

Anyway, good luck to you.

Not sure if they would benefit me being in Northern Ireland.

Yes mine is the Agile, I haven't done much heavy driving or towing with it and a little surprised at 60k its pretty much done. I bought te fn with 38k on it.

Left the van with Iveco today as their foreman also diagnosed the van as having a bad clutch.

Clutch is £670 plus vat and labour.

Well just a call that my van is now ready, so will report back on how it all feels with the new clutch, they did a few other things too.

Maybe this will have cured that reverse crunch I used to get every so often.

Van is driving well, gear change seems smoother too.

Only thing though, my tachograph keeps flashing "sensor fault 20"
Wasn't like this before it went in, any ideas on where this sensor is?

Hi Mate
Glad you have had the clutch sorted, but with ref the fault 20, I recon it is the same fault I had when I had it, and
it was down to shorted wire down near the battery, and nothing to do with a sensor.

I suspect they have disturbed it when they did the clutch, best thing to to is take it back and get them to sort it out.

Do you think so?

Surprised it would be a shorted wire there all of a sudden, especially as the van had no faults like that when I left it in, and doubt they would have needed to remove the battery for any reason to have sybe caused a short.

But yeah I already alerted iveco to this the day I collected the van.

Hi Again

when I got the sensor 20 fault when I had it, took it into dealer, and they said it was the tacho at first, but when they contacted
Iveco about getting a new unit they were told to check out the wiring first, and I was with them at the garage while the spark was
doing the job, and he ripped piles out from the front and as I said the fault was found as the loom goes round the back of the battery,

admitting it could be some where else but it comes down from the tachograph behind the glove box and through the bulkhead,
and along down past the battery somewhere, and that's where he found the short, where it had been rubbing on a edge of the metal.

so it might well be a sensor but at the gearbox !

Got it sorted today, just disconnected the battery for a few seconds and then reconnected, fault has now gone.

It would appear the dealer didn't disconnect the battery before working on the vehicle, and I guess by not doing so, try interrupted the tacho signal when installing the clutch, this mst have threw up the fault code.

So happy that problem is resolved.

Unfortunately there seems to be another issue, it would appear that at around 60mph, there is a terrible droning type noise/sensation in the cabin, again this has only appeared since the new clutch install.
