75e17 power loss

I know this seems like a similar topic to the one previously posted on 4 May about the 75e15 but...
My 2003 75e17 is very slow especially in 1st and 2nd gears when engine is cold. It gets better when it's warmed up but still there can be several seconds delay when it just doesn't want to go and then suddenly surges forward and all is well again. It will also do it in higher gears but changing down normally gets the revs up again. Starting anywhere from cold or nearly cold I can't get enough speed to get out of 2nd gear until, suddenly it surges forward and goes like a train. Just feels like you want to push the accelerator down hard!
The truck has just gone through its MOT (26th April) and was pre-tested and serviced by a haulage company and all else seems to be fine. Even before it's up to running temperature it pulls ok and when rolling will negotiate most hills ok - it's just at low speeds. There is often a few seconds delay between putting the accelerator down and the acceleration kicking in anyway but I can live with that.
I'm guessing it's a trip to Iveco and diagnostics but would be interested to hear anyone's thoughts. Thanks.

Hi

same advise as next topic, but you don't have to use Iveco dealer, some independent garages have alternative equipment which will diagnose these.

Hi Aidan, thanks, I'll ring round a few and see what they say and how much their diagnostics are

I think that the best plan, the one I had this week showed a boost air temp of 94 C , but did not log a supporting fault code. A new sensor correctly reported 17 C and fixed low power problem similar to yours.

I am not saying this is the fault with yours hence my advise for proper diagnosis

Hi again. I took the truck to my nearest Iveco garage (I'm in France so figured it my be the most direct way to identify the problem). They put it on diagnostics and said there was nothing wrong there. They reckon it's the turbo? It's still at Iveco and I'm waiting for news. But, if it's the turbo wouldn't they have noticed it sooner? Apart from the lack of power in lower gears, it goes ok when at speed and so, if it's something to do with the turbo, could i carry on driving it and maybe get back to the UK where I could try to source a recon or 2nd hand turbo? - or is the turbo at risk of going altogether all of a sudden? Thanks for any help or advice.
Update. Just spoken to the Iveco lot. They still don't know for certain what's wrong - asking me if the back axle has been changed?? They have someone else coming in to them tomorrow who may know more about it - so much for a main dealer. If Aidan or anyone else has any ideas I can maybe put it to them as i've got to call back into the garage on Friday morning. Any suggestions welcome and I'll do my best to translate them to a french mechanic. Thanks!

Update for anyone interested or having similar problems. We're talking power loss at low speed on Eurocargo 75e17, 2003.
Truck has now been at Iveco for nearly 3 weeks. They can't find a fault with anything. Diagnostics showed no problems and they've had everything off and can't find anything wrong. They are really scratching their heads as to what to do next. As I've got a trip across to Slovakia in a couple of weeks time I'm a bit concerned that I'm going to have to go with the problem still undiagnosed.
I have translated Aidan's comment about boost air temperature (interestingly he says it doesn't log a supporting fault code so I presume this means it wouldn't show up on a diagnostic??) and will show it to them tomorrow.
As before, anyone who has any ideas I'd like to hear them. Thanks

Hi

sorry to here you still have problems, with regards to my air temperature sensor issue. It did not log as a fault on diagnostics, however it was clearly incorrect when looking at the serial data available on diagnostic platform.

Hope you get it sorted soon

Hi Aidan, thanks for your reply. I went into Iveco again today and I mentioned to them about the possibility of a Turbo temp sensor fault anyway. I thought they'd just say they'd checked all that etc but when I mentioned it they looked at one another and said maybe they should check the diagnostics again and didn't seem to know if anyone had actually checked that part out. Well, I haven't got a clue about it so I'm just hoping something will happen this week.
By the way, if it was something like the turbo temp sensor at fault would the truck still be ok to drive generally speaking even if the power loss in low gears is a bit of a pain? Thanks again.

we don't know that it is the boost temperature senor at fault, but if it was I don't think it would be detrimental to run with it. my thoughts is that because the air is less dense at high temperature the ECU will reduce fueling ( and so power ) to prevent smoke.

cheers Aidan
