Hello Can anyone help me My much loved 35 s12 van has developed a very bad smoking habit , once the engine has warmed up the engine chucks out large plumes of white toxic smelling smoke when pulling away from a junction after idling . I thought it might be the oil seals in the turbo , I disconnected the air pipe which had alot of wet oil in it , as I need the van to get me back and from work I drove it , the smoking stopped aside from a small amount of black smoke when under load . I drove for approx 50 miles over afew days , she has started to smoke again but to a far lesser degree . My question is , does anyone think it is the turbo as I can replace this fairly easily or is it a far more serious engine problem as I don't want to waste money on a turbo if this is not the problem . Many Many Thanks Steven |

Hi Woody Many thanks for your reply . Is it a big job to sort if it is the seals ? , would that cause the fair amount of oil coming through the turbo ? Steven |

Have you reconnected the turbo or has it started smoking again whilst the turbo is still disconnected? |

Hi Many thanks for your reply . I hav'nt reconnected the turbo pipe as there is quite alot of oil coming out of the pipe , I don't want to put this through the engine . As of this morning she is still smoking alittle when cold and when pulling away from a junction after idling . |

A mate of mine said that it could be the engine breathers blocked , where on the engine would I find the breathers ? so I can check for myself ! , also he said that if the valve rod seals have become hardened instead of broken an oil additive might help the problem as I've been quoted £600 - £700 to replace the seals . |

Sorry, I don't know. The turbo could still be leaking oil directly into the exhaust? |

If you take the black engine cover off the top of the engine you will see the Injecters look to the left and you will see a black plastic box with 10m bolts holding it onto the cam cover There is a two pipes one goes into the engine and one goes down to the turbo That's the breather But I thing it's the turbo |

Just open the oil cap when its running. If the breather is blocked there will be pressure there. Does the turbo have muck play? Im guessing its turbo |

Many Thanks to everyone who sent me information and advice , I'll post an update now as hopefully it may be of help to those facing a similar problem . I checked to see if there was any pressure coming from the opened oil filler cap with the engine running sand there was , someone had drilled a hole in the cap at some point and put a bolt in it so I removed the bolt so as to act as a crude breather , I travelled the eight or so miles to work with the turbo air pipe still disconnected -- no smoke at all !!!!!!! , filled with confidence I fixed the turbo pipe back in place for my return journey and hey pressto -- no smoke at all !!!!!!!!!!!!!! , I have since travelled around 30 miles and all seems to be well . I'll keep this post updated . Steven |
