once again a thank you for all good people on this forum firstly.

I have a 52 plate tector and took it for test last week (not been on the road for over a year but moved around the yard). drove it 60 miles to the test station all good, parked up, waiting for test 20 mins approx. had test failed on clamp wire on speedo cable. so went down the road about 5-10 miles in and out of traffic, temp guage got hot and heater went cold. so pulled in then all of sudden heater got warm again and temp guage went down back to around 80 ish. now this happened twice. drove home fine no probs. now could this just be a air block were its been parked up not getting really hot for so long or as some one said the suffer from compressor probs and pump air into the coolant system when using the brakes a lot???
what would be your first step ?

First thing I would check would be the thermostat as the ring in the centre breaks up if this is the case also check the small pipe on the cylinder head with the small angled pipe remove the metal union that is in the head and check this is not locked by the rubber .
The compressor gaskets don't give as much problem as the older ones but never say never you can usual tell if it is this by looking at the header tank which will usually have lots of small bubbles coming back in and this changes depending on if the air is built up or is charging
