My 2004 35s12 (only 40k miles) has just been serviced and cost £230 and my local garage discovered that the dualmass flywheel and therefore clutch need replacing plus a new nsf ball joint. I sourced parts from carparts4less to save money, £540 including vat plus £360 for labour. Today they phoned and said they had replaced flywheel and clutch but ball joint had seized they had tried heat to loosen it but if forced it would cause damage. So I need a new upper suspension arm (only available immediately from iveco dealer around £200) but no extra labour. So it's got very expensive and has used up all my savings from my newly started gardening business. What do I do once repaired, stick with it as I know this has all been done or sell up and buy something else and take another risk? What would you do?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Sam

I'd suggest you keep it.

Better the devil you know etc, and at only 40k miles the van can only just be run in!!!!!

Check my sig to see how many miles you've got left in the old girl.

Hi Sam, Car Parts for less certainly didn't live up to their name. I'm afraid they nailed your hat on at that price.
I too have a low mileage 2004, but mine has just covered 60k. A few weeks ago I purchased a genuine Valeo four piece clutch conversion kit from local motor factors at £262 + VAT.

I did the job myself but I would say around £200 labour would be a fair price.
If they persevere they should be able to remove the ball joint without too much trouble and replace with a new one and you'll have a good van that will last you for many years yet.

Thanks for your thoughts. I agree the garage are expensive a friend has pointed me towards a self employed mechanic who is more reasonable for next time. I hope it does go on and on without too much cash being injected!

Hi the clutch and flywheel together was 540 the 3 piece clutch was around 170 but I agree on the labour they are pricey. I'll look into a local self employed mechanic recommended to me next time. I hope she runs on and on now with limited money input. The garage fractured the wishbone he said even with a 3 tonne press they could not remove iball joint.Bsng another 200 quid! Thanks for your thoughts

Stick with what you have. 40K , not even run-in yet. You got another 1,000,000 plus to go yet !

Biggest killer of clutches is people who use 2nd gear to pull-off.

Keep it, I appreciate £1200 is a lot of money, but hopefully it will average out over the following years to something more manageable. You could be hit with similar bills for any van...Ford Transit for example, around £1k for new injectors and £1k for clutch/flywheel. (I'm basing this roughly on Mondeo prices, I suspect the Transit is in the same ballpark.

Not to mention the prone to failure EPIC fuel pumps used on the Ford Traansit Duratorque engines.

I'd be charging out at £210+vat fit a clutch, so £252.
Realistically, if everything goes smooth they can be done in 4 hours. So I'd quote for 6 hours just to be safe :P

With another hour for the ball joint, £35+vat.

I would think that the dealers wouldn't charge more than £360, if they quote off book times.

I wouldn't even try using a 3 ton press. A 10 ton press would struggle.
20 ton might budge it.

Yeah, I agree a 3 tonne press is a joke. Most garages, especially commercial vehicle have a 30 tonne press these days.
