Hi all, We have a Renault mascott horsebox with a 2.8 / 110hp iveco engine, firstly, are these just a rebadged Iveco or is there more to it? we have had brake caliper problems and the calipers have "Renault" moulded into them so it appears ate first glance to be a bit more than a badge and bonnet. Secondly the engine is really gutless, I have towed a caravan with a 110hp VW Sharan, the combined weight would be about the same as the empty horsebox and this is far far slower, the slightest hill sees you down the gears. it runs like there was no turbo boost ie a 2.8 non turbo, I used to have a Ducato 2.5 non turbo and know what one runs like!. There is little or no smoke from the exhaust when labouring up hill power at low throttle openings appears ok, ie on a flat road it will happily pootle along at 50mph hardly touching the throttle pedal, just nothing happens when you floor it. I have taken the pipe off the inlet manifold and there is a reasonable blast from the turbo when you rev it. We had a similar problem on the Sharan when the mass air flow meter went, does this engine have one? The air filter is a little grubby but nothing major. There is a lot of engine vibration at idle but his appears to be a bit low at 700rpm and the vibration disappears at 900rpm, there is an adjuster screw on the mecanism that the throttle cable attaches to, is it simply a case of using this to increase the idle speed?. We live in an area where there are a lot of hills and a bit more power would be good! And ideas please???? Gary |

ps its a 2001 110hp 2.8 iveco engine had another fiddle tonight, sorted the tickover vibration, the adjuster screw was seized solid, even putting two nuts on the spindle and tightening them together would not shift the threads so I put both nuts on the other end and used them to adjust tickover to ~800 rpm, much better!!. the flexi pipe from the inlet side of the turbo to the vacuum actuator for the wastegate? on the exhaust side, appears to be in good condition. There is a small pipe from the inlet manifold to a diaphragm chamber on top of the fuel pump, I have known the diaphragm to split on an old peugeot 1.8 TD but blowing or sucking on the pipe end removed from the inlet manifold showed no sign of leaking, just as well, as the 4 screws holding the diaphragm chamber together were unmovable. there was a bit of rust on the inside ofthe bajo union bolt, could the diaphragm spindle have seized?. In short, not getting very far. |

Got the top off the diaphragm chamber, all is ok, the wastegate actuator is working ok when tested with airline, the computer at Renault dealer say all ok, mechanic says tired engine with just 118,000 miles but methinks tired engine would be smoking from every orifice, breathing bigstyle from the crank and bad to start. ( there's barely a whisp of smoke, and it starts first turn even when you don't allow time for the glow plugs). Anthing else I could try before committing to a fuel pump rebuild???? |

Hi, Check for cracks to the air hoses from turbo. Check the intercooler, if it has traces of oil that mean it is cracked; check the air filter. Do not play with the diaphragm from the pump head (LDA device) See that post: http://ivecoforums.com/topic/8813306/1/#new |

To be honest it just sounds like a good old Iveco 2.8 to me, mine is just the same. Mine has just had a replacement engine, old engine was 200,000 and new engine 110,000......both the same not a bit of difference. it is loaded with tools all the time and when on normal roads pulls nicely and cruises around, show it a hill and it just dies. Saying that I did buy one of those tuning box things and it definitely gave it a little more power. mine has the other type of pump though, not sure if they do a tuning box for yours? |

To be honest it just sounds like a good old Iveco 2.8 to me, True, but whilst I didn't expect F1 performance, this thing is a traffic hazard, my old 2.5 non turbo ducato with a twin axle caravan on the back would have left this for dead! I checked all the hoses, really wanting to find a big split but they were all depressingly sound. When I took the lid off the diaphragm chamber the spindle could be depressed in & out but it would not rotate or pull out completely, there was some trace of corrosion in there so maybe the actuator pin that the cone on the spindle works on is seized. When I had the top off the chamber I pressed the spindle in by hand to simulate pressure from the turbo and revved the engine, rightly or wrongly I would have expected some black smoke from the exhaust but having the spindle pressed in made no difference to the amount of smoke from the exhaust |

My MK2 2.8td , no intercooler , has done 1,098,000 , pulls like a train and averages 28-31mpg @ max weight for 75% of the time. Have a good listen for and air leaks on inlet side , if you think there is , try some soapy water and check for bubbles. Not sure how many teeth you can be out on the cambelt before you have a problem. Have had a car once that started and ran ok , but no gut's ! Cam was 2 notches out , refitted and away it went ! Have you replaced the fuel filter ? |

Fixed it!!!!! Spoke to Mal at Flavells Thornaby, he showed me the fuelling adjuster screw on the end of the fuel pump, he told me to remove the collar and screw it in untill I started to get some black smoke from the exhaust then back it off 1/2 turn, the mid range torque must be nearly double now!!!!, it actually goes up hill in 5th |

Have done this on other engines , you may need to screw it back out a little for MOT. |
