Play in diff - how much is usual?

Hi all, this weekend I had my 2000 35s11 mwb van jacked up to service the brakes. Whilst one side was jacked up I noticed I could rotate the rear wheel an inch or two without the prop shaft moving. I'm guessing this is play in my rear diff. I know the diff whines quite a bit so might be a bit worn. How much play would you expect in the diff?

because its a common fault the a second hand diff are like rocking horse poo,
you do get a little play in them, a re-build can be ok if its only the bearings causing the play

Yeah, I've seen diffs and complete rear axles on eBay, but have no idea if they will also be suffering the same as seems a common problem. Next weekend I'll get underneath and try and give the prop shaft a good tug and see if the bearing into the diff has gone as that seems a common issue.

Failing that I might try and get the diff cover off and have a look inside. Apart from the obvious issue of oil needing draining first and refilling after, there is no problem opening the cover up is there?

I found one post on here where someone said they found a gap between the sun and planet gears. They replaced the washer under the sun gear with a slightly thicker one and that stopped the play. I've no idea how easy it is to get the sun gears out to replace the washer behind them.

Hi,

Repairing the differential is not an easy task, even replacing a washer demands precision adjustment. You need a dial gauge and an adapter for this, also technical knowledge.
Diff play is a common defect only to Daily which use another oil brand, instead of Tutela, or is not replaced in time.

We have a similar problem with our Renault mascott which uses an Iveco 2.8 engine & gearbox, not sure about the rear diff but the propshaft will turn a fair way in each direction without moving the rear wheels, it's quiet under load but noisy when the transmission goes slack.
