Clunk noise when moving off or changing down gear

Hi all, I know there are a couple of posts about clunk noises but not sure what mine is nor what to do about it.

Sometimes, often when just starting off when I first go into gear I hear a clunk/tunk noise from underneath the van (35s12 )

I sometimes get it when going down a gear as well. Once going with smooth gear changes I hear nothing, mainly seems to be in 1-3 gears I 'think'

I have no idea what to check or what bits are what, if something could let me know what I should do from the point of a novice that would be great, thanks :)

Most likely the prop shaft U/J's (universal joints).
Best way to check them is by parking on level ground with van in 1'st or reverse gear and handbrake off and try to rotate the prop shaft back and forth by hand and you'll see straight away if there is any play also a good time to inspect the centre bearing or bearings which could also give similar symptoms.

Play can also be within the rear diff (backlash).

P.S I'm not a mechanic but I thought you would park the van with handbrake on and out of gear to identify slack in propshaft, otherwise the van would roll and load the prop making any movement difficult? If its out of gear the prop will not be under any torsion so you can check UJs and also backlash.

I had a bad vibration and noise , not really a knock , which would start at around 50mph and lessen around 60mph. Checked wheels , bearings etc , found my middle UJ had some movement in. Changed the UJ Tuesday , took around 45mins , all good now ! I was surprised that such a small amount of wear could cause so much vibration/noise.
BTW , If you change any UJ's , make sure you mark it before starting to remove prop. Prop's are balanced , so must be put back the way they came off.

The play will be more noticeable Spooky as any movement that you get will be the play, unless you're Geoff Capes and move the van along with the prop which certainly wouldn't happen by accident lol
