Hi all I have a 2003 iveco daily 35s12 I think.

I have been on a trip today. Got caught in traffic and then stopped at services. I then tried to reverse and it wouldn't get into hear, all others worked so went forward. Then within 2 minutes I kept losing gears. 1st then 2nd so went to third then fourth etc. then would not get into any, i got van pushed to the side and I called the AA. We sat waiting with hood open then tried 15 mins later and suddenly gears were all released and working fine. AA man had a look and topped up gear oil and said dint see any problems that he could see. We travelled for about 3 hrs after but have just arrived at our destination and the gears started to go again and one crunched with slight smell. Any ideas anyone. Seems stranger that they got stuck but then after leaving they all worked fine again. The entire journey after was fine but had a few slow hill climbes just before this happened again.

Mines difficult all the time but i find that the bloody hydraulic cylinder which is 1sealed unit is usually at fault can cause me to not be able to get gears or not enough pressure to release gears properly it also sometimes makes pedal stick down getting sick of changing it at about £100 a go gearbox is fine don't know if any of this will mean anything to you try getting to top of gearbox with trusty wd40 and drench everything in it may just be drying out in heat and becoming a little sticky :D

Hello, when you say top of gearbox. Where do you mean to spray, inside or outside or where exactly. Sorry complete novice. Also what is the best way to get to it?

Any directions for any fixes would be fab as kind of literally stranded at the moment and don't know much

At the risk of putting words into Woody's mouth, I think you'll find he means for you to get under the van and spray the linkage and cable mechanism that is on top of the gearbox. Also while you're under there it would be a good idea to get an assistant to press the clutch pedal while you watch the slave cylinder on the passenger side of the bell housing to make certain that it is moving and returning all the way.

Can't help with the sticky gear change, except to recommend that you go to Iveco and get the correct fully synthetic oil for the gearbox when/if you change it. Its not expensive and makes a world of difference to the gear change, especially when cold. I'd already had mine changed by a garage and it came back worse than it went in, very hard to get gears to the point of the van rolling to a stop on hills whilst going from 1st to 2nd. The correct stuff from Iveco completely fixed it. Don't waste your time going to the motor factors, the two I went to looked through their catalogue for 10 minutes and then announced with a slightly confused look that it the supplier doesn't have a suitable grade, simply listed as a specialist oil.

Woody , do you pronounce it I Vecco , or Iveco. Local dealer always say's I Vecco !
Just to add , using better oil makes a big difference with these gearbox's.
