2.3 unijet, fast idle 1500rpm and injector light; Injector warning light came on upon starting and engine tickover jumped up to 1500rpm

Hi all. I have a `54` reg 2.3 29l10. The injector light stayed on upon starting one morning, and the revs picked up to 1500 at idle.
Got it to the mot station as it was due that day anyway, the guy `plugged `it in and came up with the fault code 105 (camshaft/ crankshaft sensor), and took £30 quid off me, but couldnt reset the fault. I changed the crank sensor as suggested, after the van failed to start 2 days later.
It started after cranking over ,2nd time. But still revving , and showing injector light flashing.
Anyone had any similar symptoms, and know where to start to fix it. Does it need to go on a diagnostics rig to be reset?
Thanks.

Hi,

The fast idle is symptom can be created by faulty charging system, or faulty accelerator pedal, actually the idle switch from pedal.
Failure of one of the sensors mentioned above, just leads to difficulty starting.

Yep, if the system is not detecting a good rate of charge at the battery, the revs will increase to try and charge the battery. Should be 14-14.4v at the battery after idling for a while for a healthy charging system.

thanks both for your replies. I,ll check the charging system, when I can get it started! Changed the crank sensor, the guy at the factors had the same part listed as the cam position sensor also. I brought the part home , and fitted it as it fitted the mounting hole and the electrical
connector fitted although the cable was way too long. I t made no difference, so not sure whether it needs a dedicated cam sensor, but thats the only part listed for it. Is there a way of testing a sensor? Perhaps the voltage to/from?
Any ideas welcome! Thanks.

Hi,

The sensors are the same, even if they have longer cable. It is possible to be defective the camshaft sensor not the crankshaft sensor. The sensors must have 860 Ohm. Also the timing belt can be skipped, a tooth or two.

Re .timing belt checking, I,ll be getting the cover off this week, are there visible timing marks on the cam sprocket to check the timing,as I dont have a manual to refer to to set up from scratch?

Hi,

2.3L Engine has markings on the belt and gears.... which must match.
Crankshaft sprocket will be at 9 o'clock and the mark at the camshaft will be at 12 o'clock.

I,m still wrestling with getting the cambelt cover fully off, but from looking at the cam sprocket the belt is two teeth away
from the notch. Is there a quick way to realign the belt or do I lock the sprockets and follow the procedure as if fitting
a new belt? Cheers.

Hi did you get this sorted? I have the exact same problem with my van. I had difficulty starting so I changed crank sensor and it starts straight away but now I get fast idle upto 1500 revs and then comes down by itself. Any help appreciated.
