engine depowers; the engine powers after 6 hours driving

Here's an interesting problem that I cannot solve.

I have an Iveco dailey 50C150 2003 model.
We use the truck drive to horse events towing a gooseneck trailer (3.5tonnes)
After about 6 hours it will begin to depower as it goes up a hill. The red injector light will come on.
It will do it once then operate normally for another 80kms then do it again. It gets progressively worse
until it is almost impossible to drive.

We usually disconnect the battery to reset the computer and this works for a while.

Once we eventually get home, I leave the truck for a week or so and it will be fine. Almost like it has reset itself.

This has been the usual pattern but last weekend we drove 3.5 hours...all things were good.
Driving back, it started playing up at around 1 hour into the return trip.

Anyone had experence with this issue or know of any remedies.
The Iveco techs cannot fix the problem. They reset the computer errors and it goes ok until the next big trip.

I believe it has something to do with the load and possibly the temperature of the engine bay.

I would first suspect the Low Pressure Pump.. ( if it has one, not sure about your model ) or something to do with fuel delivery to the system.

Mine had same symptoms and solved by changing the low pressure Pump.

Thanks

Hi John,

Thanks for the heads up on the pump.
Not sure if it has one but can find out easily enough.

Cheers.
Question:

Why would a faulty low pressure pump cause a problem like this?

Hi the ecu can de-rate engine power if the fuel tempreture gets to high, can happen if the engine is under heavy load and there is not much fuel in the tank , the diesel lubricates the high pressure pump and also cools it and what isn't burnt in the engine is returned to the tank , the ecu senses the fuel tempreture from a sensor on the fuel filter housing,
