Air Con, not heating and intermittent cooling?

The AC has had a mind of its own for a long time. I have a while back replace the fan speed selector switch on the dash.
Recently I have noticed that if it works, or when it decides to work, that the temperature will go cold, but the heating does not work at all now.

So I was thinking if the actual cold-hot switch selector that is next to the fan speed switch could be to blame?
But having said that, if the fan starts blowing at say speed 4 when it is on speed 2, sometimes, well nearly all the time you can whack the side of the dash next to those two selector switches and the fan will either go back down to speed 2, or if it wants to play games it will turn the fan off completely. This also coincides with hitting pot holes in the road and the whole van jumps about and that will also mess with the fan speeds.

I do not know if the fans speed issue and the lack of hot-cold metering is connected.

Does the system, when you want hot air open up a flap to let in the hotter air from the heating radiator and then mix it with the already on AC air to then 'blend' the two together to give you the desired temperature?

Where do I start to look at for finding the problem with this?

The previous owner said that it never worked, the AC. We got a new compressor, re gas etc. There is a big 40Amp fuse that looks like it has been added into the harness. There are signs of melted plastic in the fuse holder area from memory. Now as it is is getting cooler here (Oz) when I drive to work in the morning the stupid fan will be blowing air out at full speed. That is not nice especially when you have 2 shirts, a jumper, jacket and a beanie on and it is blowing freezing winter air in the cab.

It is not that cold here yet though. I have just started to remove that blade fuse in the mornings and then replace it in the afternoon when I want he AC to ' sometimes work when it wants too'.

Where do I start to look for problems for this issue? How can I fix this?

Hi,

You should start by checking the connector from the AC control panel. All the controls are electric and the air flaps are driven by electric motors.
The fan is controlled by an electronic unit, located on the heater housing, it is orange / brown. Check the fan ecu connector's, too.

You mean to just look and see that all the plugs are pushed in together properly?
What else, check for broken or bent pins maybe?

I was reading up about the heater resistors and I have taken mine out. Are they able to be opened up and fixed or checked? How do I check them? Measure resistance between pins? If so what values am I after and what pin to pin to measure from.

Another thing, there is a little fan that sits on the control panel for the AC etc, it is behind the little vertical vent bars near the Economy button. What is this for? Does it spin the fan to draw air over a sensor?

the air con fuse on mine in the main fuse box regularly overheats for some reason, bad connection somewhere or bad design perhaps? anyhow when its been in for a while..few months going over bumps makes the fan speed go up and down, when this happens i replace the fuse which at that point is looking a bit melted and its all ok again for 6 months or so
