Hi All, I've had an oil leak on my 2.8 Daily (210'000miles) for some time now. it leaks between the engine and the gear box and down on to the cross member that spans the underside, initially my garage thought it was coming from the head gasket and running down, so head gasket was replaced, but still had the same leak, then suspicion was that the crank oil seal was leaking! so its been in for that to be replaced but I still have the same leak!! could anyone suggest any cause for this leak? also, it only leaks when running, not if its stood a few weeks.. thanks in advance John |

Could it be coolant or vapour spraying out from a small pipe failure and taking old crud with it downwards and seeming to be oil? Just a shot in the dark really lol |

I have the same prob I think it's crank seal will be pissed if it's not when come to do it big job |

If it's the crank seal wouldn't there be less lube on the crank unions and so a grinding sort of noise? |

It's not coolant, it's fresh oil.. Just had the crank seal replaced so its not that either.. It's defiantly something at the back end of the block, was wondering if these crank seals need to bed in? Thanks for the replies.. |

That's a dreadful blind spot unless you can either get the van up onto a table and get your head in with a torch, or use of those endoscopes that are around £80, brilliant little cameras. Dunno enough about Ivecos, just got my first one a few weeks ago and still getting to grips with it. I'm sure Bazil S or someone else with oodles of knowledge may be along to give their opinion at some stage. Mine has a similar leak, very slow not as pronounced as it seems your's is, and the crank area is due for inspection and work after I get prop bearings and a bloody white smoke issue resolved lol Sorry I can't help at the mo dude :o( |

That's a good idea look with camera, I think I'll try that.. Good luck with getting your issues sorted out.. Thanks for your help BlueBoyHope you have better result than me mate.. Bit disappointed oil seal didn't cure my leak.. Thanks for the input Edited by plumber john, Apr 18 2014, 03:57 PM.

Dude..... Power. Steering...? Had a look under mine (35s12). Would that be a steering rack running parallel with your red cross member? It only leaks when you drive it. I bet if you wipe the red cross member clean, start it on the driveway,leave in neutral and slowly turn wheel from left full lock to right full lock a few times see what happens? Check the steering reservoir before and after? Just a notion :o) |

Hi, Usually, the engine is removed in cases like this. It is very hard to get in that part of the engine. Preseeding to have reasonable prices, the industrial endoscopes, I used a modified web cam.

That got me off the sofa for a look under van! Good thinking BlueBoy, but it ain't that mate cheers anyway.. Looks like its a modified web cam Over the weekend.. Thanks for the pic Bazil, looks like there's a few suspect areas to look at.. I shall post my findings Cheers John |

Ok, after an hour under the van with a good torch I've found fresh oil concentrated around the bottom of the block, the section above the sump! Indicated by The bottom arrow on the pic kindly supplied by Bazil-S. So it looks like its defo engine out job! Think I'll make a drip catcher for the time being.. Maybe new block for next season Thanks guys for the input.. |

That arrow below indicates the gasket between the engine block and lower crankcase. It's a rubber seal which will age over time and it will crack. Requires engine removal and partial disassembling. |

Thanks Bazil.. So if it's a rubber gasket I wonder if an oil additive like Sol-x would improve the seal.. ? It's supposed to rejuvenate cracked and hardened rubber gaskets and seals, you just add to the engine oil.. I'm always dubious of adding any thing to engine oil... |
