Possibly need a new rear axle / diff for 35S11

So my 2000 35S11 is in the main dealer at the moment. Went in to have a new rear wheel bearing fitted to sort out an oil leak from the axle. I also noticed oil on the diff, so asked them to check the pinion seal. Turns out the pinion seal was gone. There was also excessive play in the diff. I got a call from the dealer saying that they attempted to remove the pinion nut and it disintegrated. They said they are trying to price up some options for me as they knew this was a private vehicle and 15 years old, so I'm unlikely to want to spend a fortune on it.

They mentioned one option was to 'repair it' not quite sure what they meant. I would have guessed they could just get a new nut for £10-20, but not sure if there is additional damage likely as a result? Or they said they might be able to obtain a second hand rear axle and swap it over. But I thought I'd ask on here in case anyone has any suggestions, or happens to have a 35s11 (5 stud, single wheel, leaf-under-axle) rear axle in good condition lying around?

Thanks, but if it is a tipper it will be twin wheel.

I managed to find a guy in the Midlands with one, it's been shipped down to the dealer and arrived this morning. They are fitting it now as I type. Hopefully all should be OK!

I have done 2 pinion seals now and you have to wreck the nut and replace it £5 only when you get pinion off quite easy job really

Yeah, the garage said that the pinion itself disintegrated partly. Which I find very hard to believe as they must be made of very very tough stuff to withstand their normal usage.

Hi Matt,

Would be interested to hear how it prices up, although I go to Iveco for parts I've always struggled at home or used a local HGV garage as I'm scared of their labour rates!

I'll let you know when done. I normally struggle at home or use local garage too. But last time the local garage said they were not up for replacing the bearing in the axle, so I thought I'd get main dealer to do it. As it was only going to be a couple of hours, I wasn't too bothered with the labour rates! But as usual, not quite gone to plan!

The axle turned up this morning and they've been fitting it, but needed to order replacement back guards for the wheels as those on the axle had rotted away. Also the needed to cut some bolts off and needed to order replacement U-bolts.... so waiting for those to arrive tomorrow.
