HI.

We have a 54 plate Iveco daily van (35s12) 2.3 with a starting issue. immobiliser has been removed already from the ECU. reading the forums show that crank sensors can be a problem, but pressing the clutch makes no difference.

the vehicle will start intermittently but more often than not will fail to start. tried it friday by spraying a small amount of brake cleaner into the inlet manifold, and it started and then ran fine. switched off and tried to restart the engine through the day and it never failed to start.

today (monday) having been stood over the weekend, engine started twice, ran ok until engine was switched off (although the rev counter was waving around a little without the engine speed altering) then on the third start, refused to start but does splutter occasionally when cranking.

my first thought (as its a common rail engine) was fuel pressure. i attached a Delphi DS150E code reader to the van, cleared the codes, then cranked the engine and re read the codes.

the codes were:

77 - Vehicle speed sensor
Exceeding normal range
Present
Frequency 1

30 - Glow plug warning light
No signal
Intermittent
Frequency 2

2F - Glow plug relay
No signal
Intermittent
Frequency 1

so, does this mean that i need to get a glow plug relay, a speed sensor (which id guess means the crankshaft sensor?) OR is this pointing me towards an injector or similar issue? it seems odd that once its started, the engine seems willing to run for as long as you allow it and WILL restart, as long as it feels like it!

also, can anyone tell me where to find the glow plug relay to test it?

all help and advice gratefully received, as the van belongs to the charity i work for.

Thanks
