Hi All , I recently purchased an Iveco Daily 2004 MWB Hightop as a campervan project and it has turned into a complete can of worms . Firstly we had a noisy ( what we suspected gearbox ) taken out and looked at all ok . Had the Diff removed to get checked out as there was awfull whine in 4th and 5th , seems all was ok bearing wise but guy who was rebuilding could not get the diff gears to mesh correctly ie less than 3/4 contact using marking ink . Put the diff back in and whine still there . First question is can i put anything in this to quieten it down ? using 85/140 oil at present . Onto the next problem the indicators on the RHS would not work couldnt find any shorts in the system so suspected the relay and stalk beneath wheel , replaced from scrapper parts and it worked for aboy 10mins and then the whole lot started smoking behind wheel had to quickly rip of cowling and pull all the wires out . Checked again with multimeter and there was now a short , after stripping the whole system down a found that there was a wiring harness under the diesel filter rubbing against the holding bracket so got this one fixed . Now onto the main isssue at present "the brakes" !!! Just had new discs and pads on the rear and now the pads on the drivers side rear are constantly rubbing , making a right noise and also stinking after a short drive . I have checked the pistons and sliders all free , then i noticed the load valve was really badly corroded and pretty much seized , disconnected from the spring assembly and put screwdriver over top of the plunger and the plunger does not appear to be moving in the inwards direction ie you can pretty much take the plastic plunger out but i think this then presses on something that in itself is seized internally , is there anything i can do to diagnose if this is causing the barkes to stick on slighty ?? Also all the brake pipes are rotten so will have to replace all of them by the looks of it , is there a full kit you can buy ? or a case of my friendly mechanic making them all up from scratch ... Hope you can give me soem help folks :-) |

Hi Martin, my 2002 Daily after I bought it also made noises that sounded like they were coming from the rear diff. At that time it had run just a little over 30.000km in two years at AVIS. The garage wanted to sell me a new rear axle because according to him there was no way to repair it. Then I found out that you can actually get any part of the diff as a spare. But after checking the diff according to the repair manual the only thing I could find was that the backlash on the pinion gear was out of tolerance. But according to several specialists in a german forum this was no reason to worry so I left it. Checking on, I found out than that the noise was cused by the support bearings of the prop shaft. After replacing these there was no more unusual noise. The last 150.000km I have had no mor problems with these bearings. Chris |

Hi Chris , Thanks for the reply , my noise is very loud in 4th and 5th gear , i have had the diff out to a specialist who only found that the gears didnt mesh together 100% correctly . My local mechanic had the rear of the van up on stands and used the mechanics stethoscope and the noise is definately coming from the diff itself . The only thing i can do now is put in it 85/140 synthetic oil from iveco themselves to see if it quietens it down any. thanks |
