A few basic checks. obviously check for chipping on teeth or colour which shows overheating Clamp a pair of molegrips on the prop shaft connecting flange then try to check for sideways movement in pinion bearing, there should be none at all, whilst clamp is on rotate and check how much free play between pinion and crownwheel, and with half shafts in check play before half shafts move, shouldnt be excessive. looking at pinion nut the edge should be staked over to stop it undoing, really check this as if its been played with could be sign of previous damage/wear, and reassembly. It is difficult to check a secondhand axle before fitting, also put on road wheels and feel through movement if there is any roughness or play in bearings when rotating/rocking. Hope this helps its just a rough guide but might help, it wont promise to not whine when you fit it ! take care and use heavy wood blocks, or similar, for safety whilst under the van, safety first. |
