Hi does anyone have any idea why at my drivers side rear tail light i only get 1 volt instead of 12? The passenger side is fine, there was a bit of surface rust which i cleaned off but still only getting 1 volt. Wiring into the unit also looks good. Cheers |

Its possible that the light isnt earthed properly---No earth=no volts Bad earth= low volts |

I think the earths go back to the ECU via the loom so nothing to clean. There are several plugs mounted in the engine bay down the side of the radiator close to the chassis rail (battery side) you should check these for broken wires/corrosion. |

You can see and fiddle with the plugs from above, no need to remove the headlight/grill unless you want to get stuck in and repair something. |

It can sometimes be a earth cable fault, for this reason I get all earths from lamps at rear and run a cable from them direct to a bolt earth at rear of chassis, it pays to grind paint from chassis and fit new bolt to create a new earth point at rear, that way chassis rail acts as earth to front of vehicle where it is picked up by battery earth to chassis. I showed this to a main dealership sparky who said he was constantly having rear light problems on customers vehicles, he used it on many vans/trucks after and thanked me, its the simple things that work best. I have never had rear light earth problems since. Obviously where the original earth cable attatches to light cluster has to be good condition, check these out at the same time. |

I had n issue ones and could not find anything so went into service and first thing was to dismantle the light (and thus grill) to have good access And yes there was the problem immediatly visible... It's only a 2 min job so why not? |

Totally agree with Dirk, but if you do chassis earth at back as well you wont be stopping by roadside again. lets face it sods law dictates when it happens its either raining or the blue lights are behind you ! |

35C12 2005 MWB DRW 3rd gen’ crew cab tipper F1AE04 85.3 kw 2.3 cc 16v EDC 16. A low voltage reading can be caused by a restriction/resistance/impedance/short to earth in/on the live wire, such as when the wire strands are damaged, instead of 30 strands there are only one or two that are not broken. This is similar to a bad earth connection - there is a reduction in the area that the current passes through/over. Edited by ivecofd, Aug 23 2015, 06:09 PM.

Thanks for the replies people. Will have to check the earth when it finally stops raining. A new earth to the chassis also sounds like a good idea. |
