Hi Guys,

I have just bought a 2000 Iveco Daily 2.8 but it has failed its mot on needing 2 rear calipers as the handbrake is not working well. Is this a common fault, can the calipers be fixed or is it a case of replacing them?

If they do have to be replaced where have you found the cheapest to buy them from?

Thanks

John

Hi John,

the shaft for the handbrake will nomally come loose again when being treated with penetraiting oil and moving it back and forth.
It's about the only realy bugging thing on the Daily that needs to be taken care of regularly. At least what my Daily is concerned.
I hope they took care of this on the recent model.

Regards
Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply. Is that something that is easily done, or something that should be undertaken by a mechanic?

Thanks

if its the same calipers as on the 4th gen, then you can DIY. just put some oil on then put the brake on / off. of you can take off the brake lever and use a socket to turn it on / off (sometimes easier if its sticking on and not releasing on its own)

Thanks for all the replies, having picked the van up now i can confirm the handbrake does not work at all, there is nothing when you pull it up. So will this be remedied in the same way?

Does anyone have a picture of what i would need to lubricate by any chance?

Thanks

John

There are different types of braking systems fitted to different Dailys.

The hand brake lever has the button ratchet which is sprung and near the bottom of the lever there'll be a pivot both may need lubrication.
Also any swivel pieces that may be used to join the wire from the bottom of the hand lever to the dividing piece.
The wire from the hand lever goes to a dividing piece and then to each of the back wheels.
The parking brake system can be seized at the hand lever, where the wires join, where the wires are connected, in the wire guides, at the drum brake/disc brake, drum brake /disc actuating lever, drum brake pivots, disc brake callipers, integrally in both types of brake.

If the hand brake lever is moved upwards and there is no brake holding then look at the wires under the vehicle to the brakes levers see if the brakes levers move.
If the hand brake lever is moved upwards and there is movement at the brakes levers then look for brake drum/shoe wear, disc, pad wear.

If the shoes/pads are worn some adjustment could be possible to cause the hand brake to function.
If the shoes/drums/ discs/pads are worn they'll need to be replaced and the hand brake action adjusted for it to function.

Callipers are associated with disc brakes they can stick but you may need to remove them to access the area where the rust/dirt is. Sometimes the pads stick due to rust/dirt. Sometimes the calliper cylinder/pistons are damaged. Sometimes there is dirt/damage in/to the hydraulic pipes.

I may be able to find an image - you need to confirm the vehicle type you have which can then confirm the type of braking system that is likely to be fitted.
e.g. 2005 35C12. There may be information on a plate lhs on the flat area under the bonnet.

You now need to know if it has ABS or ESP braking system. There are 5 different BREMBO brake callipers.
In attachments the image taken from the wkshp ml does not state if it is for ABS or ESP.
Other images show adjustment of handbrake cable. I have not found an image of the handbrake there were some on the forum regarding the handbrake warning light switch.
