just thought id start a new thread to detail the work im going to be doing on the 1993 39/10 based camper that we boughtnlast month. aside from giving it a service fluids wise, and discovering that the water boiler has been stored full of water over probably last winter and has frozen and burst as well as some of the pipes under the floor. so im going to list it all in here and hopefully get it all down in one place. so, ive aquired a spare wheel so i now need to manufacture a hanger for under the floor where it should live, i need to adjust the rear drums to take some slack out of the brakes, and im also going to have to do something about the throttle response. its incredibly heavy and jerky, i assume the cable needs some oil and cleaning because its as jerky as hell, aside from these and changine the bonnet, (a previous owner has modded the bonnet and its now got a rather ridiculous 'air scoop' on it like some sort of hot rod, its got to go) im also going to go through all the usual electrical connectors because the heater fan is pretty lame and the lights noticably dim when i turn it on, as well as piss poor lights, dash lights and slooooooooow wipers, so something is draining current somewhere, i suspect, im going to go over it and post back here. |

I would suggest putting the spare on the rear door as it could be very awkward getting to it when the conversion is finished, speaking from experience. The wipers on my 49/10 are really slow too. |

good point, but its got a big box on the back where the doors would be if it had them, (its not got rear doors) i just saw the huge space underneath where the hangers should be and thought id utilise it again. might have to think further on this then.... |

My wiper linkage/mechanism was seized and that was wy they were slow. motor was fine. got a second hand mechanism for £50 from ebay in very good condition. works like never before. just take a photo of the fitting to the motor when parked to save a lot of trouble when reasembling Graeme |

well, we havent used the camper since we got it in november, aside from as a runaround for a couple of trips into town just to keep using it. last time it turned a wheel was new years day. anyhow, it was booked in for its mot today, but last night i couldnt start it, turns out that i left the interior light on and it had flattened the battery, so, i jump started it from my works van and it ran ok. took it for a spin and parked it up. this morning it started ok and i ran it up to the mot station, now ive not laid a spanner on it since we bought it, aside from to service it, so i expected a fail list, the only uncertainty being how long the list would be. but, it passed, an advisory on rust on the floor near the drivers step, but the chassis is solid and theres nothing close to anything structural, so its fine. tyres are getting a bit crazed but they arent too bad, though i will probably change them before next year. but thats all, it passed and is now ready for us to use this summer. the first time ive ever had a car or van thats passed its mot first time without any work being required. |

Good to have a result a John , nice one. they are good trucks, my advice would be as MOT was a flier unless you know its been done recently, fit a new cam belt, while its off a new water pump is a good idea, obviously new rollers and tensioner for belt. The reason I say this, put hundreds of hours into rebuild camper side off it then to go down the road and possibly wreck the motor doesnt make any sence. hope it all goes well . |

very sensible words. youre right. i dont know when the cambelt was done, and as it has clocked up 120k miles its probably only had one change from new, i will do it this summer though, as im not blessed with enough workspace to get the van under it and out of the veather, so i will leave it till i have long evenings and some warmth. at least then i know for sure its done, and it gives me the excuse to flush out the colant system whilst im in there too. but tyres are the priority, the tester said theyre all legal with plenty of tread, but the sidewalls and tread is cracking, but its not too deep yet. i reccon they will need doing by next years mot, so i think i will get a full set and then theyre done and out of the way. im just glad that the bloody thing has passed though, tbh im still in a bit of a daze! id psyched myself up for a few days on my back fettling and welding!,, caloo-callay!!!! just out of interest, wheres the best place to get a cambelt and water pump kit from? the engine is a 2.8 turbodiesel. and the van is a 1993. Zepplin or vexi for timing belt rollers tensioner, water pump. Probably a good idea to do the thermostat as well while your in there. I wouldn't be tempted by e-bay for critical items. Buy original parts for stuff like this is my advice, buy cheap pay heavy! Good luck with the build, I thought it would only take me a year to do my conversion, still tinkering 5 years later! just out of interest, on the topic of tyres, as im not planning to carry any weight in the van, can i fit 185/75/16 tyres to it instead of 195/75 16? i cant see the extra 10mm width making a great difference to the vans grip or handling, im planning to fit a full set of tyres to it, mot man said the ones on it are legal but are beginging to crack and probably wont last till next years mot, so i looked round thinking i could do one at a time, and then i wondered about just biting the bullet and buying a full set of brand new tyres. there arent that many in the 195/75/16 compared to the 185/75/16 and that extra 10mm width seems to ad about 25% to the cost!!! im just thinking with my moneysaving head on! any thoughts? |

John, Unable to give any advice on 185's but if I remember (could be wrong) I believe a poster on the forum had 205's put on. The 205's will probably have a good selection. Saying that, if you want a good tyre (185's) the michelins agile is a great tyre. If you use the van as camper michelin do a camping version (heavy sidewall) |

the price is the killer though, cos im going to buy a set of 6, so im not able to justify spening 500 quid or more on a set of tyres, as good as they might be. so cheapies it will have to be im afraid.... |

If you have a year tot get new ones and want to cut costs than just keep an eye out for second hand ones. Personally I don't see any problem in using 175. You will be 2.2 percent slower so that's hardly noticeable. |

thing is though second hand tyres have an unknown history and ive had used tyres that have cracked up in a few months, so i think im going to buy some budget new tyres, its never gonna carry any weight and im not planning any megga long trips across the globe, so id best get searching. |

A ggogle search of 185/75/16 throws up dozens of budget tyres if thats what your after, down to £40 each. |

ive got some on order now, 55 quid each, but they will fit them for me and dispose of the old ones, so still pretty good when you consider that i dont have to crawl round changing wheels and then figure out how to dispose of the old uns. |
