rear brake adjuster

The manual says very clearly not to dismantle or even remove the brake adjuster on the rear drums (40.10W 4x4) Why is that?
I've taken mine off dismantled them, freed up the parts that were seized and put it back together.
Is there something important that I've missed?

I can't see you had any option, a seized adjuster is useless,

Taking it apart and freeing off and giving it a coat of copper slip a am sure is the way forward.

Adjust it up once the thing in in one piece again, tapping the drum with a hammer to centralise the shoes is the method I would use.

I am sure all will be well.

can you explain about the hammer? I know which end to hold, but what exactly do I hit.
BTW, at what point do the self adjusters click round to tighten up,? I can't understand the geometry.

I always apply the brakes a few times sharply when adjusting, that also centralizes the shoes. I have not found the self adjusters very good, they are supposed to work when you pull on the handbrake. I adjusted mine by using a bent screwdriver through the holes in the bake plate, moving the adjusters by hand. Adjust until slightly rubbing, apply the brakes repeat and slacken off just a bit so they do not drag. It is how it was done before self adjusters.

Adjust as Graham describes, I just made a tool to do the job, easy to make when the drum is off, I just used a piece of flat bar with one end sharpened to a dull wedge so it is able to engage in the teeth of the adjuster, once the drum is on bring the shoes to the Drum until it can be felt that they are dragging on the drum, tap the drum with the hammer, you will feel the drums resistance against the shoes reduce when you try to turn the drum, keep doing this until the drum is tight, back off the shoes using the adjuster until the shoes just clear, check the brake pedal feels correct, firm with not too much travel etc.

All should be well then.

If your unsure get someone to take a look who knows about brakes, don't take any chances.
