New Starter motor

Just fitted a new Bosch starter motor. Details in the parts database (Yahoo 4x4 group) Bosch 0986017490-9L9. Just thought I would let people know that the new one is much smaller and much lighter due to the casting being made of aluminium. It is so different in size and weight I thought it was the wrong one, I called Bosch technical and they asssured me it was correct. It is much easier to fit. The earth cable needs to be repositioned onto one of the fixing bolts and the rear support is not required. (it weighs about 1/3) It would be possible to replace it with only removing the exhaust down pipe. To remove the old one it is easier to remove the radiator and grill. Having had problems for a while with starting I am an expert at starter motor removal! and would highly recomend a new smaller one! I am not sure how they manage to make it smaller but it is the same 2,2kw. I would also recomend checking the trigger cable and soldering on a new spade connector.

Graeme,

Looks a pig of a job, but once the radiator and bumper are off it looks straight forward.
Not done one yet but did have a problem with the trigger wire and thought the starter was gubbed.
Rain water seems to run down on top of that trigger wire and rusts up the terminal ( it did on mine anyway). Sounds like the new bosch one is the business, bet you that wasn't cheap!
