Hello All,
Can anyone tell me the setting I need to apply when using a dial gauge to set up the injection pump timing.
My engine is 8140.27S.3700. It was supplied new from Iveco in 1996 to re-power a series 3 Land-Rover.
As far as I can tell this type was used in the 2nd gen turbo daily. Hence the posting here.
Pump (Iveco) part number is 99440195 and the Bosch part number is 0460 414 122.
It's still on the engine and working so I suppose an option is to take the reading from it before I remove it.
Since I haven't done this before it would be nice to know the figures that I should expect.
I do have a manual for the engine but the pump timing is given in degrees and I need linear dimensions.

Hi,

I found a scan of a German workshop manual somewhere in another forum. It is not the IVECO workshop manual, possibly it is a separate document concentrating on the engine timing for various engines.

For the 8140.27.S engine it says, translated to English:

Injection pump VE4/11 F 1900 R 294

Static adjustment of start of fuel delivery:
- Way of distributor piston: 1mm (1.37 +- 0.04)
- reference point: "Bosch-marking" on the flywheel, 4°30' +- 45' from PMS


To me this is also a little bit cryptic. I have recently changed the clutch and flywheel and did not notice these markings on the flywheel, and if they are there then there is still an uncertainty as the flywheel can be fitted to the engine with some play due to the bolt holes being slightly bigger than the bolts. I definitely recommend to use the reference to the top dead center PMS rather than relying on the markings (if you have them). Then the remaining question is: how many mm from PMS do you have to set?

A possible interpretation from me is that you can set it to 1.37 +- 0.04 mm. First, why else should the value be stated here. Second, maybe the position of the "Bosch" marking at 4°30' +- 45' corresponds to the 0.37 +- 0.04 mm... Maybe you can try the 1.37 mm and do a test run?

I wanted to do the setting on my IVECO, too, but it is extremely hard to get to the central bold of the injection pump where the gauge goes in...

It looks like the pump type for the 8140.27S.3700 engine type (mine) is different. The markings on my pump identify it as Bosch type 0460 414 122 which corresponds to VE4 / 11F 1900R522-2 which is different from what you have. To complicate things further the manual supplied by Iveco gives a figure for pump delivery start advance of 6 degrees +/- 30'. Looks like I will have to carefully measure what the pump is set to before I remove it. Fortunately access to the rear of the pump in the Land Rover is quite good So I should be able to get a gauge in there ok. By the way is PMS the german equivalent of Top Dead Centre?

Hi,

Unfortunately I no longer have the calibration data for your engine, but it is possible that the pump to be set to 1.37 mm when the engine is on TDC, which are the same with Renault S9U-704 engine.

Here are a few remarks about how to remove/ install the injection pump.

First to answer to Raphael, when installing the flywheel are used some special tools for syncing with crankshaft. For that reason the holes are larger than the bolts.

Installing the injection pump can not be done on TDC due to the injection plunger which is already lifted. So, usually the pump is installed at BDC when the plunger is released.
In your case, you can find out where the BDC point of the pump and do some marks on the flywheel and the pump pulley.
Rotate the engine to TDC, then remove the plug fom the pump and install the timing gauge. Rotate the engine counterclockwise, until the dial is reaching to the lowest value ( the dial needle stops moving), here is BDC point.
Set the dial gauge to zero, and rotate the engine in a clockwise direction until TDC, then note value on the dial (count the number of revolutions of the needle). This your the static setting value.

BDC= Bottom Dead Center ( I am referring to the injection pump)
TDC= Top Dead Center ( I am referring to the engine)

So, remember, you do not have special tools to lock the flywheel, or are not visible markings on the flywheel, to install injection pump.
The older types of Bosch VE pumps do not have a screw for locking of the main shaft, so the pump can not be installed when the engine is on TDC and the pump is on delivery.
You must find the point of installation, as described above, when the pump is before delivery. This point must be marked by you on the pump pulley, or check for marks on the flywheel.
